restrict viewing member profiles?

How do I restrict the viewing of member profiles (name, bio, etc.) to only registered members or, better, members from a particular group? I saw one geeklog site where clicking on a member's name brought up a login box and said, "Only members can view user profiles". That's what I want to do. Advice?
