What extension for "journal articles"?

Hi all,
I am planning on extending my site to add a space that original journal articles could be posted. The space would need to contain
1) A directory of articles, preferably sortable/searchable by author, date, etc
Each article would need
1) A space for author, tags and other metadata
2) A space for uploaded content, such as referenced code or a pdf version of the article
3) A space for comments/discussion
This sounds like it's not too different than "stories", except it would need to have the functions above.
Also good would be the ability to have only certain roles post, but other roles be allowed to submit articles to be posted.
Any suggestions? What would be the best way to do this? Does anyone have an example of something like this?
Thanks so much,
Sam F

Why do you need a directory of articles is the 'search' not enough? What will you do if the number of articles grows? List all of them sorted by date?
What is a 'space for author, tags and other metadata'? Stories have an author though no tags nor metadata at present. A tag plugin is in its early release state.
An article with a space for uploaded content? Hm, did you notice the Media Gallery plugin?
Erm, did you notice the comments for stories? Maybe you turned them off?
Geeklog`s 'roles' are called 'groups'.

In the beginning they would just be ordered by date, by author or by topic (hopefully it would be sortable). Later they might get organized into issues and volumes.

By "space" I just mean "A place to put [tags, whatever] in such a way that it is associated with the article." Tags would be great. Also copyright information (if the article is CC, GFDL etc), and the ability to add further infomation.

O.k., I still cant`t imagine why a list is needed but maybe it is important to have some permanent, automatical optical listing. This sounds like a new plugin is needed.
The Media Gallery plugin does more than pics but it would not associate it with a story.
About the tag plugin: http://www.gllabs.org/forum/index.php?forum=20

Ok, cool, thanks, I'll look into that.
As for the journal, I think I might try and use Open Journal Systems. It has pretty much what I want, but integrating it into GeekLog is probably going to be nightmarish...
Probably I'll just end up installing it independently into my webspace, and just have a link to it from my main GL site. I guess the only important integration will be to try and get the users to remain logged in when they travel to it.
Does anyone have any experience with keeping users logged in between different systems?
Thanks!
