Will GL2 help stop user migration to Word Press.

In other words to what extent will it have the goodies that will help user stay and then come back (stuff like Ajax)

GL2 is a completely different codebase from GL1. It shares no features with GL1 except that former GL1 programmers are working on it.

Some GL1 plugins have AJAX and I'm sure AJAX will creep into GL1 core eventually.

The Geeklog family isn't about "goodies". It's about solid, reliable software. I don't expect GL2 to any more whizbang than GL1 from an end-user's perspective.

It understand that but it would make a big differnce for the users who have no clue as how to spell the word programming. If the team and contributors could think of some basic goodies i am sure it would few more stars to the geeklog galaxy.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think the best way to ensure that visitors are coming back is still to have good and interesting content on your site.

Besides, Wordpress doesn't really offer a lot of snazzy AJAX to visitors, does it? At least not on the sites I frequent (for the content ...).

bye, Dirk

If they don't know how to spell programming than to them Ajax is a cleaning product.

There are a few threads here comparing WP and GL. I don`t have the feeling that there is a migration to any direction. Both systems are pretty different and the main user group will also be very different.

GL is more a semiprofessional system and meant for users who like Linux and alike. WP is more like Fisher Price Rolling Eyes

What would that be "some basic goodies"?

About that. Geeklog is a difrent kind of site like WP and G allow you many more funcitionality that WP.

We have a great site on geeklog, and geeklog is realy cool, but if we are talking about new users and compare functionality i missing some more community funcitionlity. Like blogs for users, beter profile, i soo enciklopedia last time congratulation for that...

I think the solution for that is a new geek plugin for multiblog sistem and integrated http://mu.wordpress.org, like you do it with plagin for mediagalery i think geeklog has been a perfekt tool and have anythink that people need.

I think geeklog will get a lot of new users and you will gratify meny of geeklog administrators and entity G have all think thrat WP have Big Grin .

What are you missing in concern of multi-blog or user blogs? What feature do you need?

I got away from the fat slow CMS sites years ago and have been using GL on several sites for quite a while. I was real happy with GL until I went to upgrade from 5.1 to 6. I ended up loosing the ability to have all or our "topics" listed on the left column, plus we were having some trouble with our forum.
To make a long story short, our site crashed and we HAD to have something up and running real quick, so we went to Word Press and set up a temp site to use while we figured out what we would end up doing for a long term solution.
From a webmaster's viewpoint, I prefer using GL basically because the type of site we use, our "members" require a forum, gallery and an EVENT calender that is user friendly.
With WP, it took way to much time testing multiple plug-ins before we finally found ones that WORKED and would fit our needs.

Basically the only features I found in WP that I would like to see in GL is the ability for users to EASILY upload images directly into a post, a secure "contact us" form and the ability to upgrade without having to go in and and manually tweak, redo or change files.

For anyone considering WP, what I don't like about them is the lack of a "backup" system, and the inability to customize the front page of your site, so you can have a static page show up at the top of the page followed by recent stories.

We are still deciding what program we will be using but I personally tend to shy away from programs that are dependent on just one person to handle questions and since I posted a question in a forum in WP trying to get help on a flaw in a plug-in and "no one" has responded to ANY posts in over a month, I know we will be replacing that plugin.
