Is there a way to easily add some additional but optional user profile settings so that existing users can have a few more fields to add specific information about themselves? Or - perhaps if that's not doable - then changing the labels on the fields currently being used?

Not sure if that qualifies as "easily", but plugins can extend the user profile and add their own fields there.

Alternatively, you can re-label the exisiting fields (e.g. bio, pgp key). Simply change the descriptive text in the language file.

I noticed that there is a weird blank entry on the user profile page.

Looks like this:

Homepage:
: ()
Bio:

There is a blank : () entry there between those two and I can't seem to figure out what is supposed to be there. any ideas?

nvm - i found out what was happening there.

Between the Homepage and the Bio, there's the Location (check the profiles here on geeklog.net) which was added back in 1.3.10.

The empty pair of brackets makes it look more like the username (with the brackets for the - missing - real name), though.
