url_rewrite not working

I'm on a unix server, Apache 2.0. I contacted my host to enable AcceptPathInfo in Apache, but they said it isn't supported in version 2.0... So, I tried adding a statement to my .htaccess file to disable safe mode, that didn't produce the SEF links either...

I tried:
php_value safe_mode "0"
and:
php_value safe_mode "1"

Is there anything else I can try to get SEF story links to start working?

The Apache documentation begs to differ.

Also, I fail to see what safe_mode (which is a PHP setting) has to do with the url_rewrite?
