Will GL2 able to use only one file template layout, possibly css driven?
The template engine of 1.4 is a bit confusing if I try to design a tabless css layout. A lot of file became useless but I don't see the way to reduce them.

You can't change the names or number of files in the template directory for GL1. They are hard coded in the source. You should look at the Chameleon theme (it's on the front page). It is a CSS driven theme.
That said, GL2 will not use just one file for templating. Each section will have its own templates. The whole idea behind multiple templates is to make the code modular. Changing your story layout shouldn't affect how the calendar displays.
