User registration and email problems

In thiis day and age, email is becoming more and more unreliable. Mostly because of failed attempts to block spam and spammers, but that's not what I wanted to ask about.
Some mail errors are genuine; there was a real problem with delivering the mail (even if it is "we don't acceptt mail from you because of "reason X"), others happen because of butterfingers; the user managed to mistype his email address.
Is there a way to configure Geeklog (1.4x) so that the user will get an error message if the conformation mail failed? While the user is still on the new registration page, I mean.
