I don't know if you can do this but is it possible to have a unique "topic graphic" that would appear at the head of each topic category of stories

The easiest way to do this would be to use a static page as a center block there (uncheck "wrap page in a block").

For more advanced layouts, remember that you can use PHP in header.thtml, so you could add a check there to see which page is currently being displayed and then emit the graphic were appropriate.
