Theme modification

I know a little bit, that's why i'm dangerous.
I want to change my xsliver theme i have it set as the default and have disabled users from changing it. I have already added a temp pic as a logo, and changed the background color for the theme. 1. Now i would like to remove the gl menu across the top, is this something that can be commented out? 2. how do i remove the space between the top of the page and the actual content. 3. can i relocate the search? maybe to a block.? 4. if i remove the gl menu can i just simply add the links into a block? thanks for the help

Search for {menu_elements}{plg_menu_elements} in header.thtml and delete it.

Play with table in the header.
