is there a way that I can have a section in the header area that would allow peple to submit their email address and be added to my a database of newsletter subscribers? Instead of having to login with username and password type deal sort of a short cut?

If you set digest to automatic, anyone who registers with a username/email will receive the digest mailings even it they never log-in.

Having the ability to log-in and change settings (e.g.- choosing which topics to receive in the mail) and giving feedback through comments, etc. makes GL a CMS.

If all you are looking for is a mailing list program, PHPlist is Very good and free. You could set up a 'sign up' for PHPlist in your GL header, but why have GL if you aren't going to use it?
