Language "on" variable use in commentbar.thtml

I'm revamping some of my comment section files and wanted to use the language variable {lang_on} ("on") in the file commentbar.thtml
eg. "5 comments on: Article Title"
Can i do this without modifying any geeklog core files?... so that users who download the theme do't have to worry about doing the same modification.
If not - no biggy.
