Adding mood code without installing journal plugin

I want to add a "Current Mood" or "Current Music" entry when I create a story a la Livejournal. The journal plugin supports mood functions, but I don't need the cute smilies, nor am I 100% fond of the journal layout. Anyone figure out code to add that?
