I noticed that if I give basic story access to members when they submit a story it show on the main page by default. Is there a way to make it not show there by default. I've looked at config.php and cannot see anything that changes this. Thanks

There is no such option, but you could add it in function storyeditor() in admin/story.php after the line that reads
After that change, all new stories would default to "Show only in topic".
