Preview of Postings on Home Page

Our home page will preview the latest story submitted to each
topic page. Is there a plug-in that will do this or do you know
of an easy way to adjust the PHP code to make this happen?
For example: If I have Categories A-C, then there will be only 3 posts on the main page which will be short snipets of the latest posting to A, B, and C.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
