I asked for help installing GL before, but this time I am not asking for help as I am going to try to install it myself. Since I am already running an ealier version of GL -- v1.3.5sr2 -- and want to install the latest version. Can I just unzip it to the directory where GL already is, and will I have to make any modifications, and will all the stuff that is currently on the site be lost or not?!Michael LauzonFounder & Lead Project ManagerInceptionOS Projecthttp://www.inceptionos.org/michael@inceptionos.org

If you have your own box then you should create a development version of your site that mirrors your production site but has a different set of files and a different database. That way you can safely do upgrades and make mistakes without any harmful effects. Of course you probably know this already. Given that these are my basic steps: 1) back up files and database...moving them is even a good idea (mv /path/to/geeklog/ /path/to/geeklog_old/) 2) copy Geeklog tarball to /path/to/geeklog/ 3) uncompress tarball 4) edit config.php 5) edit lib-common.php 6) bring up http://www.mydomain.com/admin/install/install.php 7) follow instructions in documentation for doing an uipgrade (this should be straightforward) 8) Once your database is upgraded, test the site that it is working 9) copy themes from your back-up over being sure to note any changes you may have to make (again, these changes are in the docs) That should be it!---The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.
