I have noticed several people discussing indexing the db. Is this somthing that I need to handle manually or is this automatically done when setting GL up?

Depends on whether your Geeklog install is a fresh install of 1.3.7(sr1) or not. If you originally installed an older version, you might want to run the addindex.php script that's included in the tarball (see the docs for details).

Don't expect huge speed gains, but it may speed things up a bit here and there.
