Comparison of GL and PN

Hi all...great looking site here. I am new to the portal stuff...real new...haha. What I am looking for is honest and unbiased comparisons between Geeklog and Postnuke. I heard that PN developers were leaving Pn for a spinoff. 1. But honestly, are they about equal or one better than the other? 2. Is one more stable than the other? 3. Which if any has better and more features, or are they about equal? What features does one have that the other does not? 4. How long/mature has GL been around? 5. Are they both about the same to install?(I threw PN up last nite before I heard about GL). 6. How will GL integrate with discussion boards? 7. I noticed that there was a beta plugin for phhb out here, is anyone using it and how is the board performing? Stability? 8. Will the themes on GL be able to go over to the board as well? 9. Which board do you folks recommend that would be the best to work with GL? 10. The beta phhb module...will it allow Gl to import the member database for the portal? 11. I really like this theme..awesome. that's it for now, and thanks for any advice..I am truly trying to pick the best and would like comments from folks with experience on both. Because if PN developers are indeed leaving and going to a spinoff, then PN may not be the way to go. thanks again..t

Well, if you're looking for an unbiased view, you're probably in the wrong place ;-)

Can anyone provide links to independent tests or even comparisons of the two?

Just some quick notes: PostNuke can probably claim that it has more features / add-ons. The question is - which of those do you really need?

The one weak spot of Geeklog here is the forum. There are several solutions to more or less integrate forums (namely phpBCool, but they're not too easy to install and maintain (from what I heard - I'm using my own half-baked "integration" with YaBB instead).

There's also an effort underway to develop a new forum specifically for Geeklog. Have a look over at gxblock.com about their progress.

Geeklog has been around since 2000 and has always had a focus on security - you might want to check out the history of PN under that aspect ...

Hope that answers at least some of your questions.

bye, Dirk

here's the closes theing I've seen to a comparison chart. http://www.cmsinfo.org I found it really hard to choose which system to go with. I basically over the last year (on and off) looked for, waited, hoped for, yearned for and then finally just decieded upon GeekLog. Maybe because I've been using it over at macosxhints.com for the past year or so. If GL were to tie up with anybody for extra added abilities I'd love to see Ib/phpBB and 4images be the ones. http://www.invisionboard.com/ <-- previous the developer of ikonboard http://www.4homepages.de/ <-- a really nice image gallery with all the things you'd like to see. The developer had also done hacks for Links from Gossamer-Threads. phpBB would be nice but they're going to develop their own portal after version 2.2 is released or something like that. here's also another nice script to mingle in. http://www.dadabik.org/ It looks like that could take care of lot's of the back end database work. cheers

I looked at a bunch of CMS's including PHPNuke, PostNuke, and Geeklog among others. A few reasons I chose geeklog over others: 1.) PHPNUke and PostNuke were not as well designed on the back end. 2.) The IRC channel for geeklog on FreeNode was very helpfull. 3.) Geeklog actually has a vision statement. The guys who are working on it let you know where they are going. Plus they seem to be really eager for feedback.

I agree with the 4images part. It is a wonderful/powerful image gallery script that could totally rewrite how geeklog presents pictures.
About a forum, its on its way! Check out GxBlock.com for the latest news on it. You can also see it in action at Country Web.

On that 4images gallery....be patient Smile I am almost finished. 4images has to be one of THE best gallery scripts I have ever had the pleasure of running across. I've always been of the opinion that, for whatever reason, those darned plucky Germans really know how to put a script together. I use 4images on my own site (currently non-GL, but it will be GL as soon as I finish up my plans for world dom... I mean the Geekary.) and in truth its a big inspiration for the Geekary. So hang tight. Just a little bit longer. I was going to start on a Geekums script afterwards, but it looks like GxBlocks has that nailed up.
