Hi,

I voted yes, but to be honest I would like to see fallback functionality so that it works both ways.

I know this is aditional work but I think its worth it. Finally it depends on wether I trust a site or not and not if I trust the CMS that site uses.

I kind of second that...
JS can be used to significantly enhance the user experience, but I think you should think twice before adding such enhancements and not use JS like crazy...

If we ever want to see any AJAX features then you will need Javascript but yes, it's possible (but alot of extra work) to create site features that are basic without JS and enhanced if javascript enabled. The new yahoo.com site is an excellent example.

Still I do really wonder how many users don't leave their browsers with JS enabled and leaves me thinking it requires spending 3x the effort to add features that work both ways to address the needs of .05%

Concentrate on the correct thing

The idea of having basic functionality if not JS enabled and enhanced experience with JS enabled is the most applealing to me.
I agree there is no point in spending lots of time to make the same functionality with and without JS.

My point is that you should use JS (especially AJAX can be used this way) to significantly increase the experience of the user. But you shoudl not add it all over the place if it really doesn't make that big difference. In theory you could make everything work with ajax never reloading the page but there is no point in that, is there?

If the majority of your viewers have Javascript enabled then by all means use it. Users with javascript disabled are used to lots of stuff on lots of sites not working, it's their choice. As long as it's compatible with as many browsers as possible javascript is a great tool.

If you get into the fine details of what to use and what not to use because a very small amount of users don't have a specific setting enabled then you really limit your options as a web developer.

Should we never use pictures on websites because some people prefer text-only browsers? Should every website be limited to 550 pixel width because some people have 640x480 monitors? Should we never use the color red on websites because some viewers might be color blind?

The question of JS yes or no is not a question like images or screen width. Its not about tech advances.
Its a question about security. JS is abused on a lot of malicious sites and therefore it is better for everyone's security to switch it off despite its nice usability addons.

We basically lock out the security aware users if we make it required for everyone to use the site.
