Hi, does anyone know how many websites are using the Geeklog CMS?

Which CMS (geeklog, joomla, mambo, post-nuke, etc.) has the most users at this time?

That`s an interesting question. I tried "copyright Geeklog" in google. What did you try?

Hi Deen, i've tried various words and phrases, such as:
- "number of sites using" geeklog
- "most popular CMS"
- geeklog CMS

For apache webservers, you can get a rough estimate of number of users, where do you go for stats of CMSs?

Number of geeklog downloads would be a start but wouldn't be a clear representation of active websites using GL.

If anyone has info, pls share.

Well, the numer of geeklog downloads compared to Mambo downloads could very well show the percentage between them. It is no abolute figure of how many installations there are but one could asume a percentage.

In the footer you can find the words "Copyright ... and powered by Geeklog" and I think hardly anybody removed them.

If you search the mambo forum for "config.php .htaccess" you will find a discussion on how to hide the identity of mambo sites. Maybe you could learn there how to look for them...

How do I use the above info to find the total number of websites using Geeklog? Is there a way to hack Google search to generate the number of websites using Geeklog? Just Googling GL simply returns 554,000+ GL related links

Well, you asked 2 things. The first question is an abolute figure which is difficult to find out. If people download GL they may not necessarily use it but maybe only test it.



The second question is a relative figure e.g. in %.



So it is just an idea if you count all the downloads of Mambo, Drupal, Geeklog (if these figures are available) you could say they are 100% and calculate the share of each of them.

The absolute figure doesn`t tell you much anyway. I suppose you want to know which CMS is most popular.

The same is true for the links you find on google. So find a wording that is typical for geeklog only. It is not the word geeklog. It is rather a combination like "Copyright powered by Geeklog".

... returns over 4 million hits. I'd like that, but I don't really think this is even close.

You would have to come up with a search phrase that exists only once on every Geeklog site out there. Otherwise, you're counting all the pages that have the above in their footer. And Googlebot loves the calendar, for example, and often spends a lot of time there, indexing each and every day, week, and month of the year ...

P.S. No, I have no idea how many Geeklog sites are out there.

Anyway, a relative figure says more. So I tried:

1.800.000 for copyright "powered by geeklog" -add -monat
4.470.000 for copyright "mambo is"

Mambo does not have a calendar in the basic install. I have no idea how to find Drupal and I don`t know how to filter WordPress.

"proudly powered by WordPress" is about 34.200.000

Somehow my feeling says the share could well be true somehow.

Thanks Dirk. What do you think about this:
- in future versions of Geeklog, everytime an install takes place some code placed in the install file automatically pings a database which records down the ping. Filtering out the unique IPs from the database will give a close estimate of sites using Geeklog.

It would be great to have concrete figures, because a lot of CMS developers are claiming their CMS is 'arguably' the most popular CMS on the web. These figures would be useful for convincing would-be clients to use Geeklog.

I can`t read it but this Japanese site seems to deal with a similar question: http://geeklog.ivysoho.com/

Again: The relative market share says more than a precise figure of many installations there are. Is 10000 much? So it does not make sense to register GL installations only.
And even the market share doesn`t say much about the quality of a software.

Well, Geeklog is not for everybody. It is extremely easy to have a nice site at blogspot.com or the mass of really nice designs for wordpress is unbeatble.

I`d see its position in a semipro / pro niche. It requires the admin to be a bit experienced and to realize the quality of it you have to have experience with other blogs or CMS. It is something that is being underestimated quite quickly and something to come back to when you are fed up with other systems.

So it is not an "Ultimate Weblog System" nor "Das bessere Weblog" but rather "the choice of the experienced" or "the choice of the pros".
