OK, I did copy the recommended code into lib-custom.php and then, following the above instructions, I also copied THAT recommended code into lib-common.php. Now I get this error message when I try to test a theme:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/mysite/public_html/gl/lib-common.php on line 4207

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: com_siteheader() in /home/mysite/public_html/gl/index.php on line 44

(I am using PFE (programmers file editor) so it is not messing up the code.)

Now, it isn\'t at all clear to me exactly where and how to paste the additional code snippet into lib-common.php. Do I paste it in so that the line

else if ($_CONF[\'allow_user_themes\'] == 1) {

is right ABOVE the existing line that is just like it (only without the \"else\") or do I paste it so that the snippet REPLACES that line, or what? Either of those two ways gives me the same error message.

I am really excited about Geeklog and had hoped to start installing and configuring it for my friends and family, so if you can help me over this hurdle it will be greatly appreciated!

Yes. I was getting a parse error too. What I found is that I could not
simply cut and paste the code from
http://www.geeklog.net/phpblocks/themetester.phps into lib-custom.php.

I had to open the source-code window and snip that, then remove the
HTML font tags and have my program editor replace the br line breaks
with proper unix line feeds. I used search and replace to change the amp,
lessthan, nbsp, greaterthan and so forth to the actual characters. It works
fine now.

An alternate approach would be to start from scratch and retype the code
on page http://www.geeklog.net/phpblocks/themetester.phps line by line
into your program editor. I don't know, maybe it's a quirk of my editor or
my FTP program... anyway, it was easy enough to get around.

What's confusing about themetester is that the installation instructions are
scattered in two threads. Here's what you do:

1) take the code snippet from
http://www.geeklog.net/article.php?story=20020506133826910 and put it
into lib-common.php. That code replaces the single line of code:
else if ($_CONF['allow_user_themes'] == 1) {

(Watch out for the curly braces, don't get them wrong.)

2) Then take the cleaned up code from
http://www.geeklog.net/phpblocks/themetester.phps and put it into
lib-custom.php

3) Login as admin and make a php block for homeonly. Read there that
when you call a phpblock function that you do NOT use the parentheses.
