there was a push at one time to move the 1.3.x branch to using ADODB which would have moved us towards closer portability among databases, however, there were other issues at the time so we reverted most of those changes.

I think it would be a rather big undertaking to rewrite everything to be oracle compliant. There are a lot of nice things based on your RDBMS of choice. Subselects are huge, triggers and stored procedures are nice, mysql does a ton of functional stuff on data, plus it\'s damn fast.

The next major version of geeklog will use db abstraction to make it totally portable, it looks like we will be going with PEAR::DB atm. We\'ll see.

Dreamscape is right, I made a valiant effort to abstract the database stuff in Geeklog but it proved to be a huge tasks that introduced a million bugs. As a results we reverted back and are saving DB abstraction for GL2

anyway you'll need different SQL statements for different databases...

This is part of the concept behind a database abstraction. You define how to connect and manipulate the data for each desired database in one location. In the rest of your code, you merely call the appropriate abstraction routine. How could PEAR be on the wrong level? It is a pre-built class library to designed to do this.
