I have opened up a sourceforge page to host my Geeklog Plugins and Hacks gplugs.sf.net and hope thereby to rescue The Pigstye back for more personal pursuits (I have other things to do with the webspace and bandwidth). I have moved all the user accounts, stories/comments and downloads from The Pigstye to the sourceforge address. I even have a new release only available from that website. So come see me there.

Mosiach and the Geekary have already joined me there.

We invite any other Geeklog addon Developers to join us also. Geeklog shoppers can then have one stop shopping. Drop me a line and I will set you up with access.

Tom

What about the other plugins page? Wouldn\'t it make sense to keep everything in the same place?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/geeklogplugins/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gl-webservices/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gplugs/
and even
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openpp/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lccs/

Getting messy!

Yes us programmers are a territorial lot and sometimes contentious -- no one wants to give up control. Look at all the good projects that have failed because of conflicts between the people involved.

To be fair I did not set up another place but just moved the one that grew up at my personal site.

I do not have control of those other places, even though I have access at some of them. The present admins of the other sourceforge sites have not set up websites at them, preferring to give support elsewhere. That is their prerogative.

I share your frustration about the multiplicity of sites and have attempted with some success in the past to get geeklog programmers to work together. I have sent personal invitations to others to join me at my present site. I welcome all overtures to merge sourceforge projects. What else should I do? How are you going to help?

Yes, I understand your point - it was just an observation, not a complaint. And the crunch is, as you say, \"How are you going to help?\" I know that developers get frustrated with people taking them for granted, but there are a lot of us who are very grateful for all your efforts. Keep up the good work!

I\'ll see what I can do from January - I don\'t have much in that way of PHP skills, but I\'m sure I can help with languages. At the moment though I have five days to finish a thesis and that means no time for unnecesary things like sleep, eating, personal hygiene, etc. Well, maybe personal hygiene...

Cheers,

Euan.

I'm totally in support of combining everything into one area. Can't we all play nice. I think that there should be a poll held on the Geeklog site to see what the community thinks. I haven't seen much conflict amongst the Geeklog community and that's one of the reasons why I'm such a big fan of it.

Tom, you're plugins rock and I'm sure that I speak for many when I say "THANK YOU SO MUCH!" I think that you've started a nice trend of distributing easy to install plugins rather than so called "plugins" that turn out to be hacks. I'm guilty of it myself. =(

Anyways, I'd like to see all the Geeklog accessories in one location rather than 10.

Happy Holidays!

I tried logging in on the new page with my old Pigstye user name and password. Now all I get at the new page is:

1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near \') AND perm_group >= 2) OR (perm_members >= 2) OR (perm_anon >= 2))\' at line 1

The site looks good Tom but it needs a few more items to complete it. I'd suggest the following and may just have a few easy fixes for you:
  1. Need a forum for the community discussions and support of the add-ons.
  2. Need a Download Manager to allow developers to upload contributions and enhancements
  3. Need an interactive - chat or shout style block for those quick posts and private user messages

I understand the reasoning to offload activity from a personal server. I have the same situation with my langfamily domain as the initial reasons for geeklog were to support my family site. I have tried to keep the site mostly personal but that had been increasingly difficult. I've had 3300 downloads and 30-50 users a day for the past 4 months.

We recently re-commissioned the Geeklog Plugins Project on Sourceforge as well. The forum was not released on my or Matthews site but only on the sourceforge geeklogplugins site. I don't believe it is available on any other site yet and has been downloaded 127 times so far. This has saved our servers some and offers users faster response.

I agree we need a better central site for Developers to host their files, provide support and allow new users as well as the more active community members a central and one stop location. Squatty's has been that main site for addons and a secondary site for developers to support users. We do have a collaborative and supportive community of developers in the Geeklog Community. This was one of the key items that attracted me and supported me in my early (what is PHP) days.

I don't think it is possible to have only one central site and frankly choice is good - so is some friendly competition. I know that Tony and Dirk are planning to move this site off of Sourceforge to their own servers in the coming weeks. It will also most likely be setup with the forum and offer downloads of the add-ons. The challenge will be now for developers to have to bounce from site to site - to watch for any support questions - and answer the same question multiple times. I often see users post the same questions (exactly) about one of my add-ons on multiple sites, plus my site and send me an email. Whew!, now I have even less time for my family, work and geeklog development.

I recognize that this is not a new site - a replacement for your other site. I'm supportative of the idea. I'm just blogging ... as this is just the nature of a growing community. I just hope users recognize this and continue to be patient with a development community that gives so much time and service for such a low price. This is one place where you defintely get more value then you pay for.

Cheers,
Blaine

Gimme time, gimme time I am getting there. (Even though I was waiting for the next forum release. You did notice that your plugins are soundly beating mine in the pole?)

MrGXBlock has given me permission to host all his downloads and work since he is not going to support downloads anymore. Right now I am in the process of sorting this out in preperation of uploading it to cvs and getting the downloads on line. At least his work will be accessible and not lost into the vapor trail.

Now if we can just train the users to put support questions on the correct website. ;-).
