Welcome to Geeklog

Greetings from LinuxTag

LinuxTag was off to a quiet start on Wednesday, which didn't really surprise anyone, given the nice and warm weather we're currently enjoying over here. The real traffic is expected on Friday and Saturday.

The most commonly asked questions at the Geeklog booth were So what is Geeklog? and Does that iBook run Linux? which just goes to show that we have some evangelizing to do - and which is exactly why we're doing this.

Those of you who can't be here can download our flyer and I'll try to post some more interesting photos here. Flickr.com also has other people's photos under the linuxtag tag.

Here's what others have to say about 'Greetings from LinuxTag':

Geeklog Platform
I am going to get up on my soapbox and preach about Geeklog.  For those of you that don’t know, Geeklog is a website content management system.  It just so happens that Geeklog is used to run this site.  Everything you are looking ... [read more]

Great Job Dirk.. Fanastic stuff.. And funny about the iBook.

Having looked at the Flyer and looked at the websites that use Geeklog, there's one thing that stands out. Geeklog needs professional looking themes, http://www.geeklog.net is a good example. Geeklog is Butt UGLY and until some designers sit down and create some professional looking themes, Geeklog will remain amateurish, as was prooven by your flyer. Until the last release, the biggest problem was the editor, now that this is solved, the next hurdle will be to make it look PRO!!!!

Angain, congratulations and great work!

I'm biased but I thought the fly looked good. Things around here could always use more polish. There is a lot the community could be doing right now to address your theme issues. 1.x has ton of themes but more could be used. 2.x is looking for someone to shape the look of the next generation of Geeklog and there have been no takers.

And while I'm on the soap box, I'd just add that there is always room for more good help on both development branches. If you are looking for a great open source project to give to, would like to build upon a resume or just have something 'cool' to work on, give us a holler.

The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.

The flyer looks great! It is the sites you click on that look like something from a 70's movie.

You're doing a GREAT job mate, keep it up, we love Gekklog, I'm just a simple UNIX admin and I know shit all about creating pretty graphics... or good looking sites but I know someting Butt Ugly when I see it...

Well, I`d say it is not amateurish but "technical". The Linux webmasters on the LinuxTag loved the system.

How do others do it? E.g. Wordpress had a big competition. See The WordPress 1.5 Themes Competition Blog http://www.alexking.org/software/wordpress/themes/blog/index.php

Drupal is so clever to adopt design: "The Slash theme is originally from Slashcode. I found a version for PHP-Nuke that I later converted to Postnuke and now to Drupal." http://drupal.org/project/Themes

The selection of sites was more by content than by design. I was especially looking for sites somehow related to the event.

But I also ran into the problem of finding attractive-looking sites for the slideshow that we had running at the booth all day. I've been telling people how easy it is to change the design of a Geeklog site all of last week. Now all we need is someone actually demonstrating this by coming up with a stunning design ...

bye, Dirk

P.S. The flyer was made with Pages, btw. First time I ever used that program, actually.

I actually think geeklog is extremely easy to customize. The trouble is most people don't either know how, or just plain don't. Take a look at one of mine: http://dev.neven57.com/
