Regardless of any possible origins, "Geek" just refers to the standard English meaning. "Log" is slang for Blog. I guess it means "Blog for Geeks". But it would probably be more fair to this site (and the license) to keep it in English (so your users' first search result for this name would be this site). Unless, of course, this site has a local mirror that calls itself after the name you used.

What is "the standard English meaning" ?

About keeping it in English, I guess thats fine. Cause we do name brands in local language as they are without changing them. Like e.g we say: MicroSoft , as its used in English but in local language letters.

If you reply to the very last post, there's no need to quote it, especially if you don't just quote relevant parts.

As for the meaning, just see its Wikipedia article.

Sorry, I forgot to delete the quote after I finished writing my replay. Hopfuly I will care next time.

As for the Wikipedia article, I gave it a try and searched it, but couldn't find what I were looking. So would you plese mind telling me where can I find it ?

Also, want to say that I know the word " Geek " has some special meaning in the techno societies, but don't know which meaning this Log have or Adopted or chose.
And, as you know, when a person want to use something he becomes much curious about its meaning, so when someone askes him about it he may answer them clearly.
And I think the best answer to give in that case is the one provided with the original source.

Thanks

The problem is that Geek has no "official" definition in English. Different people give it different definitions. And I'm sure you will find the same holds true here. Different users of Geeklog define the "Geek" portion of the name differently than other users of Geeklog. The wikipedia article will probably describe many of these different definitions in a slightly biased fashion. http://en.wikipedia.com/Geek

As for "log", it is short for blog, which is short for weblog.

Yes, I know it tends to some different meanings like what are in the wiki. But you know, its not an acronym like Log. It's most likley a full word. And I am talking here about the word Geek ofcourse not Log.

Not sure what you're asking, really. "Geeklog" (lower-case "l", please) is the name of the application and doesn't need to be translated.

If you want to know where the name comes from - that has been pretty much explained above, with links to Wikipedia thrown in for good measure. So what's still not clear?

bye, Dirk

P.S. "Geek" is most definitely not a German word. Most Germans wouldn't even know what it means (or, before Markus jumps in, how to pronounce it).

Alright, I will consider that lower case as sensitve situation while translation or when maping to the mother site.
And I wouldn't like ot argue about if it should be translated or not. But as it has a meaning, I think it's much better to provide a good information like e.g what Ubuntu does.
Also, I don't care much where that word comes from as much as I care about it's real meaning.
And I don't really care much about it's real meaning as much I care about what I use and what pepole would like to reacomend me as a pre-blogger about what the should use when they want to blog.
And in that case if they may ask me about its real meaning and what does it mean, then I should tell them what I know "regarding" the main site's wiki (which is this site) not regarding wikipedia's site or any other sites even if they are dictionaries, in the reason the word has different meanings not such as only one meaning.
I hope I were clear about what I were saying, and I hope I don't bother anyone here. But I really would like to install my own blog based on this script and fullfilled with correct knowledge about it, so my first topic in that case can be an introduction to this software/script.
And if you would like to know how would pepole mis-understand the technical meanings of this word in my socity, I don't ever mind to tell you. But also, I would never rely on a technical meaning of a word for this software not have been realied it's site's wiki.
Regards

P.S. Please, also if don't mind take a look at this topic http://www.geeklog.net/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=90174

Please learn to use autotags. In this case it would be [ forum 90174 description] (without the first space). It would look like this.

The naming as geek log a weblog for geeks made sense when GL was developed, for an English language security geeks portal 10 years ago.

The word geek is problematic as even English speaking people like it or not. People of other languages may not even understand it at all or confuse it with similar local words.

What language is it that you want to translate it to?
