Hi there,

I have installed Forum version 2.7.2 on my Geeklog Version 1.6.1. I have followed all of the instructions, 6 times now and I still can not use it.
All of the menu items come up and also when I click the Admin Forum button I get the nav bar with stats, settings, forum etc, but the rest of that part of the screen is blank. If I click on any other forum button it just comes up with a blank screen, apart from the main Nav bar at the top of the screen. If I click on that it shows No Categories or Forums Defined, which I am guessing would be correct. I have no error messages coming up.

If anyone can shed some light on what might be the problem then please let me know.

Thank you.

Lizard.

Try some of the tips from the Blank page FAQ entry and see if that makes it display an error message.

bye, Dirk

Thank you for your reply.

I have tried the suggestions on the blank page and a few other ideas too, but still no luck. I must add that the whole page does not go blank, it is only the forum area where I assume all of the forums and forum details should be for each forum menu.

I will probably have to get someone else to look at it. I am running out of ideas.

Idea

It says in the installation details about puting files in the public_html directory. When installing Geeklog, I named the file weblog, which is in my public_html directory. Everything in Geeklog works fine. Forum is the only problem. Am I meant to put the forum files in the Geeklog (in my case, weblog) directory or the main public_html directory?

"weblog" is fine. Actually, you should have a directory weblog/forum now.

It's probably something really simple, but without an error message, it's hard to tell from here. Double-check the installation instructions - see if you missed any files or directories (e.g. the lib-portalparts.php).

So the site is example .com/weblog and the forum example. com/weblog/forum ?

The instructions of the plugins are not so easy to understand. :kickcan:

Why does spam-x work against users with as many postings as me?

Ok.
Thanks again for the replies. :kickcan: I am new to all this, but I am getting there!
I have uninstalled everything to do with the forum and started again.
Hey..... I got something happen this time. An error message as follows:

A file permissions error has occurred. Please check the permissions on the script and the directory it is in and try again.

I am assuming this has something to do with chmod?

I am not going to touch anything now until I get a reply. I don't care how long it takes. LOL

Thanks again for your help.

Hmm:

Had a little play around today and still no luck. Could not find anything about the file permissions anywhere either.
I am starting to think this programme is not going work now and I should give up.

Shame.

Thank you for all of your help and support.

So when / where exactly do you get this message? I don't see such a message in Geeklog or the forum plugin, so it may be coming from somewhere else.

Hi,

I was about to delete the program altogether today, but thought I would give it one more try before I do.
The error comes up when I try to install the program.

By "program", do you mean the Forum plugin or Geeklog as such?

Assuming you mean the plugin: So you've uploaded the files, logged into Geeklog, went to the Plugins admin panel and clicked on the "Install" link for the forum plugin? And then you got the above message?

That would be odd, because I don't think the plugin checks for any file permissions on install (and, as I said, I can't find the error message you quoted anywhere in the plugin).

Maybe you should accept the offer from Markus (1000ideen) above and let him have a look at your install.

bye, Dirk

Hi,

Yes, it is when I try to install the plugin through the plugins admin panel and clicked on the "Install" link for the forum plugin. That's when I get the above message. I did not get this before, when I installed it incorrectly!

Thank you for your help anyway.

I will get in touch with 1000ideen when I figure out how to do the additional FTP account on my server.

I am starting to think that computing is not for me. I should stick to the filming and editing instead. It has taken me six months to build my main website and I have received a lot of good compliments from it. Although a forum is in demand I feel that moving on to forums etc will obviously be a nightmare for me. Although, saying that. I do use another forum for my missing persons and that runs fine. (apart from the captcha)

Thanks again for all of your help and support.

The installation is almost impossible to understand, I also messed it up each time I tried it until I prepared the files on my harddisk.

The whole of Geeklog offers more than a usual forum but the forum-plugin is easier to administer as it has less features than a phpbb. There is not really a spam problem and you don`t need captchas though they would be working.

If you invest a little time into GL you will probably find the later use very rewarding.

Hi,

I must admit I did get loads of spam on my other Forum from somebody selling shoes, etc. I later found out that they were scammers. If I do get this forum up and running them I will more than likely transfer all of the contents over.
As for the GL forum, I did map everything out on my hard-drive too before uploading the files to my server, but still no luck.
I might give it one more go.
I realised, that in my media gallery there is a list of errors in the error log, but I wouldn't of thought that would have anything to do with the forum as it is mentioning G2.

I will have a play around and see if I can see what is going on again.

Speak soon.

Hi there.

I have now tried every different way possible of installing the Forum on my system and I have come to the conclusion that it just isn't going to happen.

I have spent way too long on this now so I have completely deleted it from my server.

There is not much point me using Geeklog either without the Forum, as that was the main reason for using it.

I now know what it is like for all you computer experts out there. It must be a nightmare.

Thanks again for all of your help. It has been very much appreciated. I will stick to the basics from now on.

If I do get my FTP account figured out then I will come back and see what can be done.

Lizard.

Thanks again.

Hi again,

I thought I should mention that I have not touched anything else to do with Geeklog.
I have deleted the Forum files ONLY!
I now have errors with the rest of the programme.

If I do decided to continue I am assuming I will have to uninstal the whole programme and start again.

:banghead:

I think I will take a break from this project and re-direct my customers for the moment.

Will be in touch with the update.

LOL

Well, at least I am not the only one who can't go this.

OK.

My friend has solved the errors, but hasn't got a clue why the forum is not working.

We will keep you updated so that others can learn from any mistakes we may have made.

We are now looking in to the additional FTP account on my server so that help can be arranged.

No, probably there are just a few files missing. If this is repaired then it should work fine again.

It is a bit like deleting some files from the windows system folder...

Jumping for joy!

Good news!

My Forum is now working.

The solution: CHMOD was set to 666 on all of the php script files located in public_html/admin/plugins/forum instead of 644. Maybe the 666 was some sort of sign. LOL

Also the public_html/admin/plugins/FORUM directory was set at 777 instead of 755.

I hope this means something to somebody and it is of great help should anyone else encounter this problem. I would hate anyone else to have to go through what we have had to go through.

Thank you so much for everyones help and support.

:shakehands:
