Upgrade from 1.3.11 to 1.6.1

Hey all,

I have been working for past few hours on upgrading my GL site from 1.3.11 to 1.6.1. The site works fine but all of the admin functions are messed up. When I try to access admin/moderation.php the following error message shows up: The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.

Should I have replaced the old public_html folder from 1.3.11 with the new public_html folder from the 1.6.1 version? It seems like most of my data and everything has been preserved; the only problem is with editing and deleting old stories, for example. And I can't access the admin panel without that error message. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks.

You're supposed to replace all the *.php files with the new versions. Did you not do that? Mixing old and new files will cause problems.

Most of your data (stories, etc. but not images) is in the database, so it's relatively safe (backups can't hurt of course).

Thanks. Is it okay if I replace the PHP files with the new versions AFTER I have run the install / update script already?

Also, so you're saying that any files that are NOT .php files should be the same ones from my old 1.3.11 public_html folder? Because what I did at first was just replace the entire old public_html folder with the new one. Would that have caused this problem? At one point I think I had all new 1.6.1 files and still the admin section was broken and inaccessible.

Sorry for the third post, but I just tried replacing all the .php files in the admin/ folder with the new 1.6.1 files. Now, the admin section is still broken, but it is also blank. Before, it showed all of my old stories; I just could not edit or delete them. There were also no options to "create new" story like there used to be. But there was a list of all my old stories. Now there is nothing in any of the admin sections. They are all completely blank, as if the data was lost.

The only thing that you should probably keep is the images directory, and from that really only the articles and userphotos directories. Plus the code for any 3rd party plugins that you may have installed. As usual: Keep a backup.

I guess you did upload the new install script (which is also under public_html) - but then again, you wouldn't have been able to update if you didn't. So I guess it should be safe to upload the missing new files now. See if it works then.

Blank as in the entire browser window is blank? Or blank as in you see an empty list?

In the former case, see the FAQ: Blank page. In the latter case: Re-install your database backup and run the upgrade again.
