Will Geeklog change for the better ?

Changing the code in Geeklog to use register_globals turned off is no small feat. Nearly ever page that process GET or POST data relied on register_globals being off. We could fix this but it would take a considerable amount of time and the regression testing would be a sizeable effort. Instead the initial decision was made to wait for Geeklog 2 to fix these problems. Geeklog 2 is the next generation of Geeklog that is in development (albeit slowly).
.

[Update 2003-12-09] An exploit of register_globals was found in the Gallery plugin for Geeklog. Obviously that plugins is maintained by a third party but given the popularity of it we want to make sure users of the Gallery plugins read this article explaining the exploit.

That was 2003 or even earlier !! It is 2009 !!!
CMS scripts as well as hosts have moved to php5x and php6 is seen on the far horizon.

In the meanwhile, look at the progress made by Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal - particularly on security issues and php5x front. php5x and newer mysql also helps to code better and make many things faster and less clunky.

Geeklog is dying a slow death ! Any good news that things might change ?

There is no consolation in the fact :
- things are getting developed but slowly. ( how slowly ? )
- google summer code and new modules ( too few, too little help, eg. no social profile yet )
- users like us are not producing code ...( glog has to attract developers, glog has to decide how )

Not sure what you're talking about. Geeklog works with register_globals = off since version 1.4.0, and that was released 3 years ago.

[Update 2005-12-18] Starting with Geeklog 1.4 (currently in beta), future Geeklog releases will no longer require register_globals to be "on", although certain plugins and add-ons may still rely on that setting.

GL also does not use the advantages of php5x

GL2 has been abandoned in favor of Aptitude - still GL2 forum is there and GL2 is mentioned all
over the site. Aptitude, the way it is progressing, seem will not be available for a production site in
another 5 years. GL is not attracting any coders too.

There is no real development of Geeklog any further - so the question is,
is this project being allowed to have slow death?

Geeklog 2 has been renamed to AptitudeCMS. This reflects the change in focus: It's no longer mainly aimed at replacing Geeklog, although that may still happen eventually. The framework of AptitudeCMS is already in use, just not as a CMS yet. In the meantime, we found that there's more life left in Geeklog than we thought at the time when the decision was made to rewrite it from the ground up. That was some years ago and we're all a bit wiser now ...

Yeah, the topic should be renamed.

As for Geeklog: I would think it has made enormous progress over the last few releases. The fact that we've just been accepted into the Google Summer of Code for the third time in a row (even though the program has been cut back somewhat this year) shows that your gloomy outlook isn't shared by everyone.

Geeklog has also been present at exhibitions and conferences, and we just made another effort to make things easier for potential developers. I'm really not sure why you think the project is "dying".

bye, Dirk

I will be happy if it is not, at least the core people seem to be quite complacent with the plethora of links you have

given. Google summer of code needs to thrive, and Gl is not yet dead, so why it should not include GL ? Just imagine where

Google was and GL was at the beginning, and it should have been the other way round. Sigh.

Now for the main reasons why it is dying :

- please have an unbiased look at usage and adoption curve of drupal, joomla, wp and GL
- aptitude and GL2 seems to be walking the same dead slow path - look at dev rc-s of other cms-es
- no php5x initiative
- no "social networking profile" bias ( aptitude has some pages but useless) while *all* other cms-es have moved towards

it
- lack of relevant modules compared to ...again, drupal, joomla etc

and, now, please compare the developer and participant activity at these two forums, unbiasedly , that is ( see the stats

of 5-6 years back also to realise the downfall of GL)
drupal forum -
GL forum - http://www.geeklog.net/forum/
Drupal forum - http://drupal.org/tracker

It will be nice if the outputs of Summer camps are compared with that of say, Drupal.
Winning opensource awards is not important as awards are not always judge of performance but then GL has been abysmal at

these too, over these years. I am not posting links, as they will be an embarassment. But you may say if everyone is

happy, why complain ?

Which ones?

As far as I understand it is mainly the visibility of development which is irritating to you?

Sigh!

You cannot create a content type if you wish so.
More importantly NO social networking module, except GL all CMSes and forum scripts
now have a way to add comments and widgets to profile page.

See this modules :
http://drupal.org/project/cck
http://drupal.org/project/views

There are many more, not fancy modules, but necessary ones, and the list gets longer day by day.

Hello,

As a GeeklogFan can you please help us and write 1 or 2 social networking modules for geeklog?

::Ben
I'm available to customise your themes or plugins for your Geeklog CMS

This is the most dumb thing when you ask end-users and feedback providers to write code, if I could do that I would not go CMS hopping and write my code instead.
Many people shift from one cms to another because they are not code writers - they understand php and tweak here and there though.

It seems - really it does not matter to anyone the way GL is progressing.
And it seems everytime my questions are met with questions, or dumb links, pseudo asssertions rather than finding anything positive and jumping-to-action sort of thingies. This is opensource, this is voulnteer based, no one needs to jump - all true! But then there is a slow death happening, thats also true!!!

Well, other than your assumption that having some sort of social networking feature will save us all - what exactly are you suggesting that we should do? I didn't exactly see a lot of constructive or concrete suggestions in this thread so far.

While that comment above maybe wasn't very constructive: There are other ways to contribute to open source projects.

There's always documentation (you can even work on our documentation without actually writing anything). You could try and sponsor (or find sponsors for) features that you care about. Roam our bugtracker and help clarifying things there. Or simply "spread the word".

bye, Dirk

P.S. And for starters: How about creating (or using?) an account? At the moment I couldn't even tell if all the above posts are from the same "Geeklog-Fan" ...

You ask someone who gives feedback "why dont you write that?" and when she/he retorts back you accuse of being not constructive. Sure there are ways of contributing like writing docus but you fail to answer why you fail to attract me to do that ... like you fail to attract developers like joomla or wp ot drupal. YOU SEEM TO SHY AWAY FROM ANSWERING THIS.

In case you missed it though I told you so many times above, constructive tips again

- no php5x initiative
- do self comparison with joomla, wp, drupal and find what it is ( arrogance/laziness/bad code) that does not attract developers, module makers etc so much as other cms-es do
- yes, social networking is a VERY important factor, so trying to drive round by saying 'what other than it' is a bad plan
- speaking about GL2 for so many years and then saying 'aptitude' which is also not done and seems will never be done betrays user expectations
- comapare Google summer code activities, number of conferences, awards of other cms-es, please put up a result externally or internally

Now you have at least 5 points - please answer by point and not by beating around the bush Smile

PS - if you think creating account is a must, please make the forum that way. Easy!

@GeeklogFan: Come on man, relax, if you need something, try to find somebody who can help you to find or make it. If you don´t like GL, go search and find another CMS.

Do not forget what ´CMS´ means. Geeklog is a CMS, not a social networking script, and GL offers nearly everything you could wish for a CMS. So if you want fancy options which do not belong to the core functions of a CMS, please do not complain about it in such an offending way.

Please do remember that GL is a completely free CMS, and that the developers spent a lot of their time in making GL to what is is now: a great free CMS. No fancy features, but a solid base to build a great website.

Of course it´s not perfect, I´m aware of that, and social networking is a hot item at the moment, but GL also doesn´t have any paid options like Joomla, where lots of plugins and modules (alway the ones I like/need :banghead: ) cost $$, and GL is a lot easier to install, configure and extend than Drupal.

So you mean one cannot criticize ? I also wrote 5 points above.See those. Answer.

Do not forget what ´CMS´ means. Geeklog is a CMS, not a social networking script,

Joomla, Wp, Drupal - all are CMSes. Yet everyone do have social profile these days. And these modules are indeed free with these cms-es.
Even Aptitude has devoted pages to it. Why? Can you say why then?

Please do remember that GL is a completely free CMS

So is Drupal, for example. All the modules one can need are FREE there, and there are at least 3000 more fancy ones that are free too.

Geeklog is a CMS,

Fine! So why can't I *manage* content as I like ? Why cannot I add content types as I wish or view content as I like ( for a change and for example, please see
http://drupal.org/project/cck
http://drupal.org/project/views )
And what is stopping a modern cms to go with the gophp5 initiative or to leverage the advantages of php5x ?

( And my! who is afraid to post the stats I asked for !!)

So do you mean all that I am doing is troll and flame ? If yes, I quit ( that icon is typically used by Dirk Smile)
If you think I had some solid substance, please list those, imbibe quickly beforethis project is dead , and move ahead. OK ?

Hello Everybody,

I have also a question, what is so much better in PHP 5? Not so long ago someone told me, PHP 5 has a better security framework, but then when was the last time we had a serious problem with Geeklog on the security level.

Surely all major search engines think that all other CMS packages are less secure... Or at least they score much higher on search questions like "Joomla security" or "Hack Joomla", and, Drupal also scores pretty good but the king of search results is Wordpress...

It seems like every hacker in the world is trying to break a setup of Wordpress...

This forum has no login requirement, same as all my websites... I never have problems with spam ... I also have a few Joomla websites and need to pay for a few good plugins and still I hardly can use it as it is full of spam if I not take care on a daily base...

Sure... I also would love it if Geeklog would develop a bit faster... I also would love it if I made more money, and surely would love it if traveling around the world was just taking a few minutes of my time... But all this, and I can think of much more, are not possible yet or maybe will never be available...

My two cents, PHP 5 because it is trendy and other do it... doesn't mean that Geeklog needs to do it... That would just be so stupid :banghead:

Hi Richard, staying ignorant about php5 is not bliss actually.
If you have some problem with php4 or GL+php4 down the time, say another 2 years or 4 years or in further future guess what? there will be/there is no support for php4 even by php.net!

I was not exactly speaking from security angel, php5 can give better code and faster codes, apart from the facts of security and support from the php community.

Staying alone in a corner may not be good these days when so many collaborative stuffs like opensocial are being imbibed into the classical frameworks of CMS. "I am CMS, I am ok with php4" ... this attitude is not "Aptitude' Smile

If you or any one have time, plase take a look at the following url and you may be surprised to see that many FREE cms-es have already joined the movement long, long ago.
http://gophp5.org/

Instead of giving a plethora of mostly useless uri or trying to beat around the bush it will be nice if someone says "yes, we will join, we will do, and ,,, NOW!"

Its very very impolite and prejudiced. When you do not have answers
please do not call someone "troll". What you are doing is "prejudice"
and perhaps now you are thinking of "discrimination"

Anyway, I stressed the
- importance of php5
- social network type profile for members
- way to manage content, by creating content types and "view"s of content
- some explanationwhy GL2 is not any more, why they were kept waiting, why GL2 still listed heer
- comparison to other cms-es to do some soul searching.

SEE THIS STATS, PLEASE : http://tinyurl.com/ckchxp
I think these are enough "constructive" criticism. Fanboys can boost fake ego but not really make you progress Smile
