Alter Header

Jodie Smith

Hi

I am creating a website with www.123-reg.co.uk (instantsite). They provide the backround template, which other than being able to change the colour you cannot alter the picture in the header or layout. I have been able to open up the text denoting the layout etc but I cannot edit it. I cannot select the header or the backround in anyway. I am hoping to create my own header.

Is there a way that I can alter the header with a graphics editor? How would I do that? As no editors enable you to open the website inside the editor? I can only edit my website through the instantsite website.

Thank You

Jodie

To change the header, you would need to edit the header.thtml file. Can you download, edit, and upload the file (via ftp, for example)? Sounds odd that they wouldn't let you exchange at least the header graphics.

What is ftp?
Sorry I am a bit of a novice when it comes to creating websites, I was also surprised that I wasn't able to edit the header.

Not sure how I would download it? But then even if I alter it on different programme how would it then be possible to get it back on the website to publish as I cannot select the header?

ftp is the most common way to upload and download files from/to a website.

In Geeklog, the header is described by a template file, header.thtml, that's mostly HTML with a view variables to tell it where the title or the name of the site goes. It can be edited with a simple text editor. You only need to be able to download / upload it ...

Alternatively, some website admin tools include an editor that lets you edit files on the webserver directly. But I guess you already checked that ...

Am just downloading a text editor, if I can manage to edit the text, do you know what sort of change I need to make to ba able to put what I want in the headers place?

For the logo, we have an FAQ article and the documentation has some more information. As I said - it's just plain HTML.

bye, Dirk
