Unwanted tags when using the advanced editor

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to remove the automatically inserted <p> tags when using the advanced editor. It seems I have to switch it to html mode and then manually remove them if ever I don't want them there. If there's a way to keep the advanced editor from inserting these I would be very happy to know what it is.
