I have downloaded Geeklog 1.4.1 from this site onto my local computer - I will be using FTP access to upload it.

I'm trying to understand what is being said http://www.geeklog.net/docs/install.html#install - at this link. I make out that if I used FTP I need to upload the entire Geeklog file (once extruded from tar file) onto my FTP htdocs file?

The step 3 -
For *nix installations cd into /path/to/geeklog and do the following:

chmod -R 775 logs
chmod -R 775 data
chmod -R 775 backups
chmod -R 775 public_html/backend
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/articles
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/topics
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/userphotos

FTP Users: If you're doing the chmod via a FTP client, you must also apply the chmod to the files in logs/ and public_html/backend as well as the directories themselves. Most, if not all, ftp clients do not perform this command recursively. That means you need to set each file within each of these directories manually.
Could someone please explain in simple steps what this means, becuase I don't have a clue.

Thanks very much. Big Grin

You need to change the permissions on certain folders, and do this recursively (-R). If you're stuck using an FTP client, you can "change or set attributes" from the menu. So...
1. Right-click on logs and change the attributes or permissions to 775, which means the owner has read/write/execute permissions (7), the group has read/write/execute permissions (7), and the rest of the known universe has only read/execute permissions (5).
2.Go into logs and do the same thing on everything in there.
3-100. Repeat for all of the folders and files.

Luckily, there isn't too much to worry about. Some people get odd errors, and you may have to set the permissions to 777 (everyone has all read/write/execute permissions) during the install, then go back later and re-set them to 775, as above.

Good luck!
