I searched a few different ways but couldn't find information on this. I was hoping there may be a way to integrate the FCKEditor into the forums. Would it be possible? Would I insert code to call the FCKEditor into the html for the forum? Thanks everyone!

It's doable but I think it will be overkill to us fckeditor for forum.

If you search this forum to find the codes I posted some time back for using of fckeditor on blocks and mail users, that will give you an idea of how to do that for the forum.

In anycase, I don't recommend using it, and the forum is for quick posting and there is enough buttons for the purpose.

I thought about it, and I think I agree with you about it being overkill. What I need is the ability to upload an image while posting to the forums. I know it can be done through the FCKEditor, which is I was considering it. Its an internal site, so I'm not concerned with what people upload, its going to be a controlled environment.

Consider this a bump.

I too am interested in image upload for the forum. I started a thread over at Blaine's site: http://www.portalparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=7692, but haven't gotten very far with it.

There's also samstone's thread that he mentions above (thanks samstone! :shakehands: ) about adding FCKeditor to the block creation page:
http://www.geeklog.net/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=2&showtopic=74244&highlight=fckeditor

Perhaps we can start collaborating in the thread over at Blaine's site. The more people asking for this feature (image upload at least, I agree that the rest is mostly overkill) the better.

I have a modified version that supports adding attachments which then appear as a paperclip icon beside the link to download the file - would that not be sufficient? This way any file type can be supported.

If you want images integrated into the content - then why not use Mark's MG plugin and an autotag to display it in the forum?

Thx for your suggestions Blaine!

Do you have an example of this attachment process? If you've open-sourced it, I would be curious to take a look at it. If it is a "paid upgrade", contact me and we'll discuss it. :-)

I am currently using the excellent MG plugin, and thought this might be a way to go, but in thinking through the process, it seems my users would have to go post their image in MG (and then wait for moderator approval), and then come post in the forum. Correct? This seems like extraneous effort.

It's sad, but I've come to realize that many users (mine at least) are inherently lazy in nature and need things spoon fed to them in a manner that they either already understand, or can easily grasp. For this reason, I still like the FCKeditor option the best as it seems the easiest for users to wrap their brains around. (ie. it functions closely to many popular word processor programs)

Perhaps in the future, you could consider a config setting (turned off by default) in the forum plugin for the advanced editor. Much like the way it is in GL 1.4.1 now. I realize that you might already have this implemented, knowing how smart you are, and are reserving it as a "paid upgrade". If this is the case, I totally understand. Please contact me and let me know how much you would charge for FCKeditor integration within the forum. If it is within our budget, we'd be happy to paypal you.

In the meantime, I will continue to try and figure out how to integrate it on my own. Anyone else that is interested, please feel free to :helpme:. I plan on first integrating FCK into a block from samstone's suggestions above, and then going from there.

Cheers,

Geiss

Just keep in mind FCKEditor puts all of the attachments in a shared zone, which means any registered user (or even any user at all, if you plan to allow anonymous users to upload files too) could edit and delete every other user's files.

Also, FCKEditor doesn't put any limitation at all on uploading, so anyone could upload unlimited amount and size of files (limited only by your php.ini).
