I've spent hours trying to figure out how to change the file permissions for the following:

chmod -R 775 logs
chmod -R 775 data
chmod -R 775 backups
chmod -R 775 public_html/backend
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/articles
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/topics
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/userphotos

I am using Server Operating system: FreeBSD (i386) 4.10-RELEASE
with UNIX, which provides an easy-to-use interface for uploading and deleting files. For file access, it displays a "View File Details" window with checkboxes "read, write, exec" for "User, Group, Other." I attempted to change the file permissions by checking all the boxes, but that proved successful only for "data" and "backups" file. And let me be specific in saying that it is FILE access and not FOLDER access which I have that option for. For each folder I wish to change access permissions for, I have to click on the folder, then click on a file within that folder to change the permissions for that file within that folder. Somehow, that worked for changing the access permissions for the folder itself for "data" and "backups." I wish to go into a command prompt to simply type in the above so I can change the Folder access permissions, but the FreeBSD File manager does not have any option to go into any command prompt. PLEASE HELP.

Thank you

You said it worked for a couple of files and folders but not for all of them. This is strange. Some "easy-to-use interfaces" don`t refresh propperly or show wrong results but basically they are the way to go. It seems you did nothing wrong just try again.

I can`t help you with command line access this is usually a more difficult thing.

I tried again. But the same ones have issues. Any other suggestions? Please tell me how I may get command line access.

Is it on your PC, is it webspace, is it a server? Maybe your hosting service blocks 777 settings?

I am using my PC to log on to a File Manager Server called:
FreeBSD (i386) 4.10-RELEASE

No I do not think it blocks 777 because when i check off all the blocks for the files that work, the install admin script shows 777. I do not know how to get 775 however because unchecking any one block lowers the access to something varying from 761-771.

Help?

Best advice is to try an FTP programme like Filezilla. For advice on root access you should ask your provider / hoster.
