I installed the forum plugin per the instructions, except that I unzipped it locally and FTP'd the various parts to the server. When I click install, nothing happens. Looking at the error log, I get "Wed 26 Jul 2006 12:14:01 MST - Someone has tried to illegally access the forum install/uninstall page. User id: , Username: , IP: "

I am logged in as admin, and I can do anything else in the admin panel except install the plugin. I am using GL 1.4.0sr5-1 and the forum plugin 2.3.2_1.3.9.zip

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure you have register_globals=on

I take it that the registers globals is in a htaccess file I need to create?

Depends on the kind of access you have on your webserver. If you have access to the php.ini or can use or own - change it there. Overwise, try the .htaccess approach.

There is a php.ini in the root that looks like it was created by GL. Will that one do or is the htaccess method just as good anyway?

BTW, I did look in the instructions for everything I needed to do during the install. I did not see any of this stuff.

Edit: changing it in the php.ini that is in the root is definitely a step in the wrong direction. I get "Template Error: set_root: /home/content/*/html/layout/professional/forum/layout is not a directory.
Halted." now.

Geeklog doesn't come with or create a php.ini.

Some hosting services allow you to use your own php.ini. That usually gives you more flexibility than the .htaccess, so I would use that. If in doubt, ask their support.

Geeklog itself works with register_globals=off. Some of the plugins still require it to be on, though.

That php.ini thing was definitely BAD advice. Now I ONLY get that error. Thanks. Any ideas?

Well, did you copy the forum's template files, as stated in the installation instructions? Looks like you didn't. I don't think it has anything to do with the php.ini.

That particular php.ini did gave a register globals thing. I did do everything the instructions said. It is obvious they are incomplete anyway. That register globals thing should have been in the instructions too.

Edit: looks like the forum plugin modifies the lib-common file. I removed the forum files but now GL won't start @ it is looking for those files.

To properly uninstall a plugin, you would have to go through the uninstall (from the admin's Plugins panel). But for that you'll need the plugin's files ...

What you can do now is go into the database, table gl_plugins, and set pi_enabled for the forum plugin to 0. That should get your site back up, but you'll still have all the forum's database entries in your database.

bye, Dirk

Very Happy I fixed it by reinstalling everything then installing SMF. I added a link to the menu to access it. SMF is much easier to install than the GL forum, plus the best thing is that it works!
