What a shame

I am sorry for what I am about to say but I feel it only fair to other users who are thinking of install geeklog.

I have been playing about with portals/CMS for a few months now trying to find the right one for me and my users, I would like to think that after installing atleast 20 different scripts that I could be classed as someone who knows what he is talking about, dont get me wrong I am not saying that I am a programer or anywhere near that good, in fact far from it.

Geeklog has left me feeling like a complete novice, in fact after 2 weeks of install attempts well i say attempts, it is so complicated that I never even got to run install!!

I guess you really do have to be a geek to use this software!!

"What a shame" as I really liked the look of this portal, but alas there is only 1 place for this software on my pc and that is the trach can.

I would like to end on a possitive note and say what a great job you guys are doing here and I have no doubt that anyone who has a few weeks to get the software installed will find it worth the wait.

Sorry to hear that you feal that way but I have to disagree. I am not a programmer either, my previous website was only very basic html, and I thought Geeklog was fairly easy to install. I came across a couple of problems during the process but went back to the install docs and was able to figure it out on my own. The whole process only took a couple of hours and I have since made changes to my theme and installed several plugins, all without any knowledge of php or mysql. I would recommend geeklog to anyone and think it just takes a little patience and thoroughness to get up and running. The people in this forum are also very quick to respond whenever you might have a problem.

Thanks,
Bill

I suppose I am a novice when it comes to these CMS's ... I tested a couple of the other big names last week, and am now building and configuring geeklog. There's been a few "puzzlers" along the way, but each time I found that if I took my time and read the instuctions (which is rare for me) things always worked out great. Solutions to problems I couldn't figure out on my own were generally found here on this site.

This morning I installed the Forum plugin... I spent about an hour and a half trying to figure out how to post -- there didn't seem to be any means of doing so. I searched in vain for others who had the same problem. Then I realized I had created a test catagory but not a forum to post into.

I'm lovin' geeklog -- it's teaching me quite a bit about myself, and it's turning out to be exactly what I had been looking for in a CMS... I'd definitely recommend it!

You don't have to be a geek to install Geeklog, but you might become a geek after installing it. Very Happy

Installing other CMS does create a frame of mind to look for similar steps druing Geeklog installation, which makes you fail to see the Geeklog concept.

With that said, it did take me more than a year to understand the directory structure Mr. Green. Not every server allows me to install /geeklog/public_html, as suggested by the docs.

My first installation was /behind_webroot/geeklog, and /behind_webroot/public_html (wich is web_root), and I still use this method because it works best in most situation and is much cleaner than having a bunch of directories behind the webroot (BTW, I have installed and reinstalled at least 100 times of GL sites now).

After being a GL user for four years. I have learned from the developers that their initial intention is not for creating a CMS for everyone, but for their own professional projects. So, thinking from that perspective, Geeklog is a professional software, so I now use if for professional purpose and treat it with professional patience.

I would like to end on a possitive note and say what a great job you guys are doing here and I have no doubt that anyone who has a few weeks to get the software installed will find it worth the wait.

I don't quite understand this part. How can someone appreciate GL, without playing with it successfully? But thanks for the positive note. You are right on because, after four years of usage, I can vouch that Geeklog is a darn good script!

The above is exactly my problem, the file structure comes with a public_html folder, when you run install it tells you that you cant run install with Public_html in the path, so you moved somewhere else and then when you have done that you have no chance of installing the script, and then you start again...its like that film groundhog day! I think 2 weeks of me doing the above is giving the script more than a chance! Dont get me wrong, I am really disapointed that I did not get the script to work as after about 2-3 months of looking for a script that geeklog is bar far the best....just my luck that it wont work!

What really makes me laugh is that my site host has geeklog as part of fantastico (auto install) ok its an older version but i guessed that an upgrade would be easier than a full install. However even the auto install cant install it correctly!!, I think the man upstairs does not want me using geek for some reason

Well I think its time that I just admit defeat and move on to try the nest cms as the geeklog script is just too hard, I am opening a avatar/wallpaper/emotican site so will need gallery software, considering how long I have spent trying to install geeklog, I dread to think how long it would take to install a gallery!

I gave up smoking 2 years ago and this has made me so angry I have had to go buy some cigs, could you not have made this script a bit easier to install, we are not all programmers you know!

It seems that you didn't set the paths in the config.php correctly.

It also looks like that you are using CPanel server. CPanel is the easiest server to install Geeklog.

To install Geeklog the recommented way, you should load the directory and files from the archive to /home/germinus/ so that public_html directory would be where the server's public_html is.

If that is how you install it. Then your problem is not setting the paths in the config.php correctly.

germinus,

in case you haven't seen them yet, you may want to try the Alternative installation instructions.

Also, I've seen it more than once that people started to change all sorts of things in config.php when they didn't get it to work right away - usually things they should have left alone. So maybe start over with a fresh copy of config.php.

HTH

bye, Dirk

I just wanted to say that for me, 99% of my problems with ANY CMS is my host. I have tried Geeklog, CMS Made Simple, Xoops, Joomla, Mambo and something else I can't remember.

Just my two cents GEEKLOG is the ONLY one I've kept. (on several sites) Mr. Green

Oh, FWIW, This forum is the ONLY one associated with any CMS where you actually get competent help. Thank You to all who have helped me. Smile
