Hi all,
I tried to search around here for some similar subjects, but none of these are compare to mine. If i didn't searched good enough... sorry for that, i apologize.

But, my question:
I installed the latest Geeklog version. This went without any problems, so i think i did it quit ok. (For a newbee and definately not a nerd)
But now i saw some really nice themes i want to try/use. I downloaded these files and was trying to upload them into the 'Layout' directory.
But i think that was not enough to activate them. The files i downloaded the .tar extensions. I read somewhere that i have to expand the upload...?? I tried to find this option in my ftp clients Smart FTP and WS_FTP Pro. But without any succes.
Can somebody explain me step by step how to install (these) themes?
Thanks anyway for your time to read my topic.

Greets,

D72.

*Happy new year everybody!

If you only have ftp access, you'll have to unpack the tarball on you PC and upload the files from there. Pretty much like you probably did with Geeklog itself.

Well...
I have to confess that i installed Geeklog with help of 'Fantastico' in my Cpanel. So that was pretty easy. No unpacking things and no uploading. Just pressed some buttons a couple of times and Geeklog was fully placed on my server.

but i did tried to open/extract the .tar files (of the themes) with WinRar and WinZip. The only thing what was "unpacked" was a file without an extension.
Hopefully i shared enough info now so you can understand my point of view.

Make sure the theme you choose is for 1.3.10 or up.

Use WinRAR to unpack the tar ball, don't use Winzip. You should get a folder with the name of the theme. Upload the folder under the public_html/layout/ folder. That's it.

Then you should see the new theme listed in the Preference page under User Functions. Select it to use is. To use it as default, you need to change the layout name in the config.php.

Hope this help!

Thanks man...
It worked... i saw the folder in my Preferences and i was able to select it. But when i saved the new theme from my Preferences i saw immediately this error:

Template Error: filename: file /home/d72/public_html/blablablabla/cms/layout/Marine_v1.1/header.thtml does not exist.
Halted.

I closed my browser and was going my way to the frontpage again in a new window. When i came there i saw that my 'Geeklog' layout still was in the 'Professional' theme, no Marine and with no error as mentioned above. What is happening here? I'm so sorry guys i have to bother you with these simple questions, but again, i'm a newbee with these things... I really would like to learn how to use Geeklog. I read most Doc's about it, but till now i couldn't find these issues in it. So hopefully you can help me out with it.

Someday... i can help you maybe Rolling Eyes

Ok...
I searched for some similar probs here on this forum and i saw some wich could have helped me. (i think, but it didn't)
Maybe the problem is with this.
In my config.php you can find these lines:

// This should point to the directory where your config.php file resides.
$_CONF['path'] = '/home/d72/public_html/blablabla/cms/'; // should end in a slash

// You only need to change this if you moved or renamed the public_html
// directory. In that case, you should specify the complete path to the
// directory (i.e. without the $_CONF['path']) like this:
// $_CONF['path_html'] = '/path/to/your/public_html/';
$_CONF['path_html'] = $_CONF['path'] . '';

I changed everything i came across here on this forum wich would solve the problem. But nothing helped. I removed the $_CONFIG['path'] . I chenged some other lines too, but without any results.
When i looked into the layout directory of my Marine theme i also saw that there is no directory list like 'Professional' has. I'm a bit confused and out of energy to look what might be the problem. (watching at my watch now... working on it for almost 6 hours now Confused )
I hope this will make my prob clear.

Till now i have everything working correctly.
Explanation: First of all i downloaded a Marine theme from Axonz.com, this was a .tar file. I extracted and Winrar made a new directory on my desktop with a file in it with no extension. Strange in first place. But after a lot of reading and trying to solve it i was just trying some stupid things, for instance... to rename the extracted file in the theme directory wich Winrar made of the Marine theme. I just renamed the file from Marine_v1.1 into Marine_v1.1.rar. I was hoping that Winrar wants to read this handmade compressed file... and it worked! Winrar read the file and i was able to extract all directories and files wich was needed to run the theme in the 'Layout' folder. I uploaded everything and changed the theme name in my preferences. Unfortunately i ran into this same problem:

http://www.geeklog.net/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=1&showtopic=43988&highlight=Template%20Error:

I grabbed these "missing" files from the professional theme, archivestorytext.thtml, archivestorybodytext.thtml, storytext.thtml and storybody.thtml, copied all four files into the main directory of the Marine theme, refreshed my browser and VOILA!
New theme loud and clear in my vision.

...Damn what pain in the ass man. But i learned more about some issues and we are never to old to learn right? Very Happy
I hope more people here can save there same problems with this topic.

For all people here who was trying to help me. Thanks guys, you gave me some more knowledge. Its a deal - shaking hands

*But be aware, i'll be back with more questions if i can't solve them on my own!

Is there someplace I could download just themes? The company that I use for hosting for most of my websites offers GeekLog as a pre-installed script so I just have to decide where to install it and click a button and it installs. The only downside to that is that only one theme, Professional, is included. One client I have would like to use a different theme instead. The host says we could uninstall the current installation and then they could reinstall it for us with a different them, but they want to know where they could get other themes.

Thanks!

I was able to find and download the theme I want to use, IvyLeague. I unpacked the tarball using PowerArchiver and am ready to attempt to upload the files to /public_html/blog/layout/ using WS_FTP LE. I have some questions that are probably silly but I've never done anything like this before and want to avoid screwing up.

1. Do I upload the files in ASCII or binary?
2. Within the layout folder I already have a folder called Professional (for the theme that is already installed). Should I put the IvyLeague theme in its own folder as well?
3. If I want IvyLeague to be the theme that is used instead of Professional (which was more or less pre-installed with GeekLog), do I just delete the folder called professional (and all the contents)?

I might have more questions later but for now this is a good start I think.

Usually the FTP programmes know how to upload files. With WS_FTP LE I am not so sure. I also have an old version and it did not list it. That`s really bad. May I recommend FileZilla to you? That one knows what to do on automatic!

ASCII:
ASP;BAT;C;CFM;CGI;CONF;CPP;CSS;DHTML;DIZ;H;HPP;HTM;HTML;INC;JS;MAK;NFO;PAS;PATCH;PHP;PHTML;PINERC;PL;QMAIL;SH;SHTML;SQL;TCL;THTML;TPL;TXT;VBS;Giving it a try

But you will mainly have CSS;HTM;HTML;THTML;PHP here in the theme.

BTW the theme should reside next to professional and you switch it in your user settings for yourself or in the config.php for everybody. Keep an unchanged professional theme for trouble shooting.

domain/professional/
domain/other theme/

Read the FAQ How do I change the default theme?

OK, I downloaded and installed FileZilla and used that to upload the files for the IvyLeague theme. So now I have a folder for Professional and a folder for IvyLeague in the layout directory of the blog.

Now, however, I am searching for a file named config.php and cannot find one in the IvyLeague directory or in the Professional directory. Where should this file be located?

It is preinstalled, so it is probably just below domain/ but definitely above the themes.

Usually I recommend downloading the complete installation onto hard disk to understand ist better. It is not much space, some 25-30 MB but about 1000 files.

I appear to have been successful in installing the IvyLeague theme. When I logged in to our blog and clicked on Preferences, I was able to change from Professional to IvyLeague with no problems. I tried to log in using the Admin acccount to see if I could change everyone's preferences across the board, but the password must have been changed. Once the business owner gets back I'll have him log in and see if he can change the preferences across the board or if we have to delete all the files for the Professional theme, leaving us with only IvyLeague. But I think the most difficult part is done and I thank everyone for the help. If I need more, I'll be back!

You need access to config.php for several reasons. Only there you can adjust the theme preferences across the board. Indeed you could delete professional too but I`d keep it for trouble shooting.

A dirty but simple trick: one a silent moment, rename the Professional folder, and rename the IvyLeague folder to Professional. That way you don not have to have access to config.php.
