A plea from someone on a no-shell FTP-only Cheap ISP service

Consider the poor user that runs Geeklog on a cheapo ISP account that gives us no control over our apache server, mysql, etc. I recently came across geeklog as a no-cost option on my economy godaddy account. It was a one click installation and seems to work very nicely. It's great and I want to do more with it. I've installed eWiki, Contacts, mailing lists and am looking at upages. So far so good.

Some comments from a new geeklog operator;

Within the constraints of my ISP service, each plugin gives no clue as to whether it will work, not work or screw up everything. Luckly I've a godaddy server I can use as a sandbox. I expect no help from godaddy.

My ISP hides the databases that geeklog installs. They are not visible in the phpadmin I use to manage my own databases. I'm terrified that something will need to be done that requires direct access to the databases. I can backup but I haven't figured out how to reload from the backup, yet.

The plugin setup istructions are oriented to someone with shell access. I can only unpack the TGZ file on a client and push them with an FTP tool. The directory naming conventions were very confusing and now that I've figured it out they are just tedious. The general technique I've worked out is

unpack plugin tgz to folder
copy ewiki to /geeklog/plugins
delete ewiki
rename public-html to ewiki
copy to geeklog/public_html
delete ewiki
rename admin to ewiki
copy to geeklog/public_html/admin/plugins
delete ewiki

A variation skip the first copy (copy ewiki to /geeklog/plugins )
do the other two and the copy everything that's left to copy ewiki to /geeklog/plugins

Thanks, everyone. Geeklog is great.
