embarrassed
I'm having trouble in that the last password I was using to access my geeklog site is not working. I have tried using another username and password that has moderator access, but that is also not working. Is there a way to extract the admin username and password from the MySQL database, or am I screwed?

Thanks,
ahijado

Have you tried using the "forgot password" option?

You may also want to work your way through I can't log in.

Btw, Geeklog doesn't store the password but only an md5 hash of the password, so it's impossible (or at least very, very hard) to get your password from the database.

If one could gain access to the database directory, they could look at the password table using an OBDC client could they not? I don't think the hash in a md5 file happens in the table itself.

Or one could paste the hash from a known user into the admin user row and the password would be reset in effect.

As I said, you can not reverse the password hashing.

You can of course paste a known password hash (e.g. "5f4dcc3b5aa765d61d8327deb882cf99", which is the hash for "password") into the passwd field. Or use a database client that lets you type in a password and does the md5 hash for you (phpMyAdmin can do that, IIRC).

However, rather than messing around in the database, I was suggesting that ahijado tried some of the standard procedures first, which would be simply requesting a new password and checking that there aren't any of the common problems with logins in general.

It looks like I created some problems for myself when I changed the domain for the site in config.php to a domain that was forwarded to my computer that is hosting my site. I wasnt' able to log in once I had made this change. When I put it back to the site's host computer html domain in config.php I could log in as usual.

Is there something that I'm missing in the config file when I put in the site_url a domain that is forwarded to the computer that is hosting the site? For instance, the site host computer domain is http://host.domain.edu and the domain I have that forwards to the host domain is http://www.website.net

When I use www.website.net in the site_url variable in config.php, this is when I can't log into the site.

See the FAQ article I linked to above. It's all about the cookies ...

Thanks. I've gotten this to work with one site. But another site that I have on the same computer but located in a subdirectory of my public_html I'm still having trouble with logging in. The path to the second site is
/path/to/public_html/anothersite
and the site_url is
http://host.domain.edu/anothersite
The forwarded domain is http://www.website2.org

So I changed the site_url to www.website2.org and changed the cookiedomain variable to .website2.org
as suggested in config.php

Thanks for your help,
ahijado

I guess I should mention that I also tried putting in cookiedomain
.domain.edu

Thanks,

Sorry, I don't understand what your setup is there.

If you have two sites on the same domain, but in different directories, you will also have to set 'cookie_path' accordingly.

And, as stated in the FAQ, forwarding will cause trouble unless you use the real (non-forwarded) domain name in the cookies.
