Well, after months of having no attacks on my site a registered user who's been with the site for over a year decided to start spamming comments with some retarded amount of pharmacy crap.

When I first noticed I went through about 6 pages deleting them manually. I then decided to check in phpMyAdmin to see how many there were. He had over 50 left to remove. Rather then do them manually I deleted them right from phpMyAdmin.

Now all those posts he'd replied to still show 1 or 2 comments but there are no comments to be found. How can I reset the counter?

That's very interesting, as the same thing happened here on geeklog.net a few days ago. Spam-X caught all the spam, though.

Can you please email me the following information:
  • The username of the spammer
  • The user's email adddress (or at least a recognizable part of it)
  • The date when that user registered
  • The IP address the spam came from

Thanks!

And the next time something like this happens, you may want to use Spam-X's "Mass Delete" module, which would have deleted all the comments easily and fixed the comment counter.

I seem to remember that Tom Willet wrote a script to fix the comment counter - try searching for it ...

bye, Dirk

Thanks Dirk. I'll get you all the info, but I'm still running 1.3.8-1sr4.

I've been working on a very modified 1.3.11sr3 (I think) that will be going live soon that will have spamX included so I know it won't occur again.

There seems to be aproblem with the IP Blacklist however (at least on 1.4.0rc1) I recently tried to delete about 50 comments myself from one spammer, where the IP was clearly indicated on the comment, and the IP Blacklist did not remove the comments.

The ip blacklist will not work after-the-fact, in other words, with mass delete. It detects the ip of the user which in this case would be you.

Why not modify it so it in the Mass Delete to check out the IP Address too? The IP Address is stored with the comment, and in this case I had to go into MySQL and do a SQL DELETE from gl_comments where ipaddress='address'.
