Hi all.
I'm realtively new to CMS's so I don't know a heck of a lot. Firstly I would like to know where and how I can access my template so I can dress up my site a little and where to configure css. I know some HTML code. I also have a Blogger account and the Blogger Template hack is set up by a tag. hit the tag and your into your Template.

Next, I'm lost as to where I can find my config.php file. I checked the links in admin but nothing there.

I tried Word press and then Nuke, and then Drupal but couldn't get anywhere with any of them.

Thanks

Hi sounds as if Geeklog has been preinstalled for you on the webspace?

Maybe you hava a look at the documentation here: http://www.geeklog.net/docs/

You`d need an FTP programme like FileZilla to access the config.php and .css

I've been reading some past Template past articles and someone said that fantastico doesn't install the config.php file. I checked the config.php file under public html in the file manager of my friends server hosting my domain name and yes config php is there but it looks like a page and not a folder file upload.

He has ftp installed but I don't know how to use the program. I understand what ftp does but I don't know how to use it. I had to remove drupal to install Geeklog from fantastico. I like some of Geeklogs features like wraping static pages around a Block.

Until I can get to that config.php file, I'm dead in the water.

How do I use webspace and where do I find it?

thanks for replying.

I'll check into the documentation again but I don't have any way of editing that documentation. It only shows me what's availible.

Right, the documentation halps you to understand how to install geeklog on your own without fantastico.
http://www.geeklog.net/docs/install.html Then you can change it as you like.

But you are right you will need some help from a friend who knows a bit more about it. Basically you download Geeklog, unpack it on your hard disk and upload it with FTP http://www.geeklog.net/filemgmt/singlefile.php?lid=635

The templates are at public_html/layout/TEMPLATE-NAME and the template name is "professional" by default.

I am trying to understand what you are trying to do. It sounds like you want to edit the template online. Am I right? There is no such ficilities with Geeklog, because it is a much sophistiacated program than a blogger.

Most of us edit the template offline and transfer it using a FTP program, like Filezilla.

Well, edit the template AND the config. That Geeklog's templates can't be changed online is just a missing feature.

Maybe it would be easier to auto install Mambo. It is very similar like Geeklog but has online editing features of the config, the templates and the css Files.

Certainly easier for beginners but the backend administration is pretty overwhelming.

As far as config.php is involved there is an old addon program that can be downloaded here. I am not sure if it still works.

here's the link.

Thanks for that little toy. I`m just receiving an error:

Warning: fopen(): Unable to access /home/www/pr1555/files/config.php in /home/www/pr1555/html/admin/cedit.php on line 93

I suppose that fopen is not allowed on my webspace. Any chance to alter that? It is not really important.

But on the other hand an online editor for template AND the config.php would be nice especially if you are not at home and can`t access with FTP.

Uh, no it was not fopen it's $fd = fopen($configpath . "config.php","r");

Why does this script suppose the file is called config.php? The name of the config.php is written into the lib-common.php. In my case I`m using GL in a multi site deployment and I have a few config.php files with names like config1.php config2.php etc.

Hm, is this little toy still being supported? Should I ask over at pigstye.net ? It would be nice if it asked me which file I want to edit.

Thanks for all the replies:
1000ideen:
I thought fantastico installed Geeklog on my harddisk from my friends server, where he's hosting my domain name. Now I have to ftp geeklog back to his server again? Seems kind of complicated

Right. But from reading these replies it doesn't seem that this is accurate. Is this how it's done with, Nuke, Drupal etc? I've got "html kit" and I can view the source code. Basicly I'm trying to style my website so it looks like something prophesional but i'm learning from scratch.

"Most of us edit the template offline and transfer it using a FTP program, like Filezilla."

Okay I think I see what your getting at. I'll check into this Flezlla. Like I said I haven't used FTP and I'm uncomfotble using it.

1000ideen:

I've seen Mambo on my friends file manager in Fantastico. Is it simmilar to Blogger? So far Blogger is the easiest CMS/Blog to use but I need a cms that is more robust then Blogger. From my understanding most of these cms's are all open source.

Sam:

Thanks for the link. I'll get to that to, whats left of this afternoon.

1000ideen:

I still don't know where my websapce even is.

but here's my Blogger page:

Thanks for all the replies guys. Very Happy

Well I only know the online editing of the template with Mambo. Mambo's approach is to attract newbies and make the installation and small variations of the theme very easy.

If you want to do bigger changes and learn to do these things then Geeklog is you choice. Both programmes can do about the same, blogging, link manager (blogroll), user administration but Geeklog is better in separating the programme from the themes and the backend is much easier to handle.

Your webspace is the space on your friend's harddisk where your domain is. Usually you use FileZilla to upload a programme from your PC to this webspace. It is rather the exception that there is an automatic like fantastico.

The point is that we don't really know what fantastico did, which version of GL it installed and if files were changed to meet fantastico's needs and if one can update this very installation in a few month.

Well lets see it from the other side: what is it what you want to do? You want to blog and change the design.

I think an honest answer to that is: take wordpress and go for an existing nice design: http://www.alexking.org/software/wordpress/themes/blog/index.php

Wordpress can do less than Geeklog but for such a simple task ist should be just right. To learn how to change the design of Geeklog requires looking into many files and wanting to understand how they work together.

Hmmm, just a little comment, I guess the main reason why config.php and such is not online editable is that it opens up a can of worms with regards to security.

I am pretty sure there are some more indepth threads about this, but making your config.php file writable for your httpd daemon is IMHO not a good idea.

Just my Just my two cents

@ Knuff:
you are right! The solution with Mambo is that you can tick "chmod config.php after edit" after your last changes when you finish it up. This is why I never used it Very Happy

@ envaneo: Finally I understood what you meant. Doh! - that was a mistake
You are looking for the theme changer!!! Have a look at http://demo.geeklog.net/ right hand side menu "Theme Tester - Try out one of the 89 available themes for Geeklog"

Geeklog does not deliver more than 1 theme with the first installation, Drupal delivers 4. Nevertheless you have to edit each theme on your PC and finally upload them with FTP if you want major changes like colours etc.
