login and new user failing

hi folks,
we are just starting to use this geeklog and new users
are trying to setup accts and while the acct is accepted, trying to login with
it gets that its an invalid acct.
i have the 1.3.11 release and the sr update, the only change i have made
is to allow folks to post without a login. has this klobbered the user access
stuff?
