Long story short:

I've wanted to install a wiki for my companie's (well not 'mine') intranet sight that is non-existent right now. I like the colllaboration ability and the fact I don't have to baby sit the site's content full time (ex. Let HR set up her own stuff).

Through a lot of research I think that geeklog is exactly what I am looking for. I just wanted to run my ideas past the site admins and fellow 'expert' geeklog users what I want to do with it and if you think this might work for me.

user based - this one is covered due to the core concepts of geeklog

moderators - I'd like to be able to allow someone control over only their topic and nothing else, is this possible? Ex. HR can not change Sales data etc...

intranet - only people connected to our VPN or are physically connect and have an IP addy from our domain can access the sight, can I lock it down further so that they 'have' to log in just to browse what is there?

mysql - I am install this on a Fedora Core 4 box most likely and if I run 'yum update' and it happens to have a mysql update, is it going to kill everything I have working.

Portability - If I need to move our geeklog onto a new server is it going to be straightforward to transfer the php configs and get it talking to the mysql database on a new system? (If my box takes a dumb can I get the backed up database up and running on a new geeklog without extreme work? users,admins, moderators...are those usernames and passwords saved in the database?)

Performance - At max only about 80-90 people would access it at a time.

I know this is kind of retarded to the people that completely understand this but i have to be able to explain this to the powers that be to let me set this up. Well that is about it for now, please feel free to reply and answer away. Also, if there is something else I have not asked that you think I need to know, please send it my way.

Geeklog isn't acutally a wiki, it's a CMS (See the linked definitions). Still, I think it is what you are looking for.


Yup, Geeklog handles users (and groups) very well...in fact better than most comparible products.


Yup, you can assign certain users or groups of users moderation ability. You can assign this per topic without problem.


Geeklog is commonly used for intranets. I'd recommend you configure apache to only allow intranet users to access the webserver (very trivial using .htaccess). It would be a relatively minor hack to disable site access to everyone except registered users, out of the box Geeklog allows you to restrict access to most of the site to registered users.


I've upgraded mysql several times and have never had a problem. Unless you "upgrade" to a broken version of mysql you most likely will not either.


Copy over a backup of your sites database along with the php and data files, make a couple of small adjustments to config.php and you're done. Not a problem at all.


Geeklog handles several sites that serve hundreds of page hits every second. Over at Groklaw they have survived several slashdottings.

Thank for your reply. I will take the time to look stuff up with your forums and faqs. I will not be able to work on this for a few weeks (get it up and running 100% but i will post back for help and success etc....
