Folks, this is not a set of complaints, but best-of-breed from other offerings/competitors.

1. A decent, working, bug-free, integrated story and comment editor, a la FCK, SPAQ, HtmlArea, or whatnot. Including working upload image capability. I understand fron the threads that this is in the cards for R2.

2. A standard, automated plugin manager that scans lib-common.php and config.php to figure out where to put everything, and then presents the admin with any supplemental questions if "unique configuration" is required.

3. An end to operating and behaviour parameters being found in a kazillion .php files. Can we have an admin panel that clearly and helpfully lays out all these parameters, along with contex-sensitive help on the individual fields? It might avoid traumatizing a philosophy and logics major when they try to decipher the way to use "Miscellaneous Settings" fields in config.php. I'm still baffled after three days.

That's it. Plugins can handle the rest unless there's a crying need for security and functionality. Unless someone wants to create some integrated CAPTCHA (even optional turn-on/off) functionality for registration/comments.

Can I ask what has you looking at Geeklog - I was sort of thinking of trying mambo on a new project.

Care to explain? All the OS specific stuff is in config.php ...

Dirk, I'm on my regular (W98se) PC now, so can't give you some examples. Will do so when I get back to my evaluation server later this afternoon. In the meantime, here's a real quickie article I posted this morning on where I am in the evaluation:

http://www.thiscanada.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=161&Itemid=2

It also explains, in response to Mambo Jumbo's query, why I am looking at alternatives to Mambo. Look at the Faq, Faqs-Technical link from the main menu , for details about the site. If you want some humour, take a quick read at the "Rhino" article listed at the bottom of the frontpage.

To Mach, my initial post was moved here. Dunno why.

Finally, Dirk, as the article says, Geeklog is really good. I'm having some problems with getting phpBB2 to appear properly in the mainline/centreblock part of the installation (no bottom footer appearing in the phpBB2 inseted block, no spacer between the "what's new in forum" and the next article on the main page, etc., but I'll work that out given enough time. The last programming I did was EasyCoder and AutoCoder on Honeywell 200's and IBM 1401's in 1979 plus some Fortran and Cobol, so it's not as if I'm even partially fluent in php or html!

Like you, I'm using the WebSite theme and, as I noted in another thread, the SPAW install I did ruined the "Reply" button, and I backed it out. So I'm still looking for a decent editor like the HtmlArea XTD-C I have on my Mambo production iste.

I have just registered another domain (thistechnology.com, currently parked awaiting determination of what CMS I will use) to write to the beginner about blogs, cms's, differences, linux, lamp stack, security, requirements and considerations, etc. So I really am trying hard to get one CMS codeset to do all four sites I am/will be operating shortly. Another is libranos.blogspot.com, if you want Canadian political satire. Libranos is a play on the Liberal party and the Sopranos, a Canadia mafia-oriented TV program. Best read from bottom up.

Quickie question, Dirk: If I d/l and nstall GL2 (I know it's beta), is FCK in there and "relatively" stable? I don't mind some grief, as long as it doesn't completly blow up.

I assume you mean 1.3.12 ...

That version is not even in beta yet, it's under heavy development. You have to be prepared to manually apply SQL updates and upgrading from that version to the final 1.3.12 will also have to be done manually (the install script will only, as usual, upgrade from official releases).

I use it one of of my sites (have to test it somewhere ...) and it works. But, as I said, getting from the current CVS version to the final 1.3.12 will be a bit of a pain.

Yeah, Dirk, I meant .12. I'll just see if I can port the HtmlArea part from the Professional Theme add-on, or try FCK, before I give up on enriched editors for now. Heck, just a simple one that has bold, italic, indent/outdent, list, bullet and insert link functionality in admin mode creation of copy would be fine. The other users can stare at plain text for now.

OK, Dirk, here's a couple of examples that I have come across so far, all of which are add-ins. The base GL install is tight re: switches, as you have said, and I imagine that as more plugins/addins are pulled into the base functionality, they will be cleansed too. But in the meantime ...

1. The Webside theme puts links at the top of the site header. In (path to geeklog) config.php, I have commented all of them out. Yet they still appear ... most, but not all. Now I know that the "My Downloads" link there is coming from the FileMgmt add-in. Similarly the "Forum" link is coming from the phpBB2 add-in. That's easy to figure out and address if I want to modify the terms. But what the heck is causing the appearance of the others that I supposedly disabled in config.php? And where can I find/modify this? It's suspect it may be in one of the theme's files (not checking for switches), or less obviously in some array within some other php file but what, where, etc? Sometimes I get two "Home" links in the header.

I know that it's hard to get standardization, real hard, so this is what happens. Normal but, as I said, configuration is tough when a simple thing like this is "somewhere". That's what I think you intended with the lib-custom.php file under /system ... to serve not only as an example placeholder but as a custom function add-in repository so as not to disturb the main lib-custom.php file.

2. The "Language" folder, continuing on the standardization thought, was a great idea and implementation. But here we have the phpBB2 add-in with its own language files. That had me going for a while when I wanted to make a change to one term, as did the FileMgmt add-in that has the same problem with a separate language file. Ditto the Menu plug-in. No big deal, and just minor examples.

Dirk, GL is great. It has well-thought-out security founded on delineation between the gl and public_html directory architecture, the intent to have all control switches in config.php is great, and there's a wide range of workable themes and excellent plugins to choose from.

There's some nits, but all in the addons and not the base constructs. This is an excellent CMS, getting better as time passes. I have a tough choice to make, especially if I can get the forum colours consistent with the webside theme and, of course, a more advanced editor for the copy bullwork. FWIW.

Actually, there aren't any plans to integrate more plugins into the base install. We're actually moving functionality (currently: links and polls, probably followed by the calendar) out of the core and into plugins (those will still ship with Geeklog, though). That's what plugins are for - so that you can extend Geeklog the way you need it (and don't have to install things you don't need).

It's all in header.thtml, in one form or another. See How do I change the menu?

Where is the problem with that? The language files are part of the plugin, therefore they should be with the plugin's files.
