I was having trouble tonight and it's the second time I've run into this. Someone had written a comment to a story on my website, I received an email that they had written it, but when I went to the website, no comment appeared. I tried adding a comment myself, and I couldn't get it to appear, though I would receive emails saying someone had added another comment.

I didn't find anything in the forums addressing this, so I kept looking for things that might fix it or cause it. I finally found it!

The ID I had given the story was too long. That ID got abbreviated in MySQL so the comment didn't match up with the story.

To fix this in the future, just make your IDs fairly short. I think 20 characters is the limit.

To fix a current story/comment, I changed the ID of my story to something shorter and then went into my database using phpMyAdmin. In my comments database, I found the specific comment and changed the story ID to match my new story ID. Then, I had to go into my story database and change the number of comments from 1 to 0.

I hope this helps someone out there who was like me and totally stuck.

Which Geeklog version are you on? Sounds like an issue we had with 1.3.10, where a story ID could be up to 40 characters, while the comment only held the first 20 to refer back to the story.

Solution: Upgrade to 1.3.11 ...

bye, Dirk

AHA! no wonder I couldn't find anything in the forums about it. Thanks Dirk.
