"Search Engine Friendly" plugin

I know that Geeklog doesn't have this yet, but there have been requests.

I think once I get my geeklog(s) up and running, I'll start working on a plugin that takes the dynamic url's and makes them static. In addition, the pages will have better meta tag support for non-google search engines.

I did this before for a really simple cms - Rodin - but I'm really going to have to work hard to do something like this for a cms as big as geeklog.

I know that Google can spider Geeklog as is, somewhat, but there are limitations. Google will only spider SOME of the urls and if the page rank is high enough. But then there are so many other search engines too we're blocking. All good potential visitors.

Now that I'm thinking about it...

Nucleus had this feature, but it had to be all built into the cms because the cms itself needed to reference the friendly urls for google to spider them.

So maybe as a plugin the most I can do is also create a Site Map that use the static urls, so Google can spider that. ARGH

Google News has told me that they will pick up my stories for Google News if I change the URL structure. Apparently, they will not accept URLs that include an ID that begins with the date. They will still index all the pages of my Geeklog site, but the presence of "2004" in the article ID is determined to be non-Google-News-worthy.

I'm hoping someone can find a way to rewrite URLs to pull the title into the URL dynamically. That would be wonderful.

well its funny the static plugin is enabled and i also set it to on within lib-common.php. yet i am only get story articles with the below format:
http://www.webmastermac.com/article.php/20040811151722101

However my topic sections are still in the old format like the below:
http://www.webmastermac.com/index.php?topic=gettingconencted

Anyway I don't know if its something i did wrong or if its just articles are all thats supported. Thanks

If you still want static urls throughout your geeklog site, then check out Mod Rewrite Geeklog

You can download the full hack including rewrite rules from here and the site gives insight into each change from the original geeklog.
