What would be the best way to place the topic image icon in front of the topic text link, on the standard topic block navigation that come with GL.

The function that displays the Topics block is COM_showTopics in lib-common.php. It shouldn't be too hard to do: Add 'imageurl' to the SQL request at the beginning of that function, then, further down, add the image to each of the entries. Also see admin/topics.php for some hints on handling the images.

Actually, I would make a copy of that function and create a PHP block, which could then replace Geeklog's Topics block. This would save you from doing the changes again when a new version comes out.
