to give or not to give UP

I like the looks and feel of this program, however, it is very difficult to install due to a luck of automathization. The instructions and the manual are not enough for most of us and the remedies from support are scketchy. I sunk on a PILE of errors and everything I have done so far tekes me to more errors. I have installed several other programs and NEVER had so much trouble. Having said all that I like challenges. What I need from you is a link to proper support or suggestins including sample CONFIG and directory TREES, the tree seems to be important because I switched files around and apparently made it worse.
Please help with the links, I honestly want to stay, I I manage, I will be the number one supporter.

Geeklog is very great and has not only a good look and feel, but also has a secure reliable engine. Contrary to your post, the manual is good enough for 'most' of us, Geeklog is generally installed quite successfully. Having said that, there are certainly many people who struggle to install the software, but this is generally because they have not read the manual in its entiriety. I agree that geeklog is more difficult to install than many programs. An improved installation process is said to be one of the priorities for Geeklog 2. However, a fairly detailed installation guide is provided, and when followed exactly, results in a successful install. (Except in cases where Mysql, Apache, or PHP are installed improperly)

You said that your remidies from support are 'sketchy'. However, I would venture to say that your questions are somewhat cryptic to many of us.

Y get an error like this: Warning: main(/home/httpd/vhosts/homeya.com/httpdocs): failed to open stream: Success in /home/httpd/vhosts/homeya.com/httpdocs/public_html/lib-common.php on line 69 Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required '/home/httpd/vhosts/homeya.com/httpdocs' (include_path='.:/usr/share/pear') in /home/httpd/vhosts/homeya.com/httpdocs/public_html/lib-common.php on line 69 Can eny one help please..

Please note, while it is certainly helpful to have the error codes, it is still very difficult to guage the context of these error. Generally, to understand what is happening, we need to know:
a. How was Geeklog Installed? If you are currently installing, what step are you on? Where id these error come from? (What page did you try to access) Did the page load, but still show errors? etc.... Basicly, we need a little background information to understand what might be happening.

Hundreds of people have recieved support through these forums, and have successfully resolved their problems. However, for this to happen, you need to provide more information, and you need to first read the documentation. The manual and faq contain all of the common errors peopl encounter. The two most common are paths being set incorrectly in config.php, and permissions not being properly set on the required directories.

What I need from you is a link to proper support or suggestins

This is an example of how NOT to receive help. Showing ingratitude for those who have attempted to assist you does not encourage additional responses.

including sample CONFIG and directory TREES, the tree seems to be important because I switched files around and apparently made it worse.

This is another example of what I mean by 'providing more information'. You say you switched files around. Which files? What was being moved. What made it 'worse'. Please remember, many of use are very willing to assist you, but cannot do so without understanding your problem, and since we can't access or see your server, we only have the isolated bits of information that you are providing.

Good luck, I hope you will successfully install Geeklog, and use a wonderful piece of software. My suggestion would be that you check that each step of the installation instructions has been followed exactly, then if you still have problems, please post a detailed description of what isn't working, how far into installation you got, and what you have already tried to solve the problem. You can also search the forum for answers that may already be avaliable.

P.S. Sorry for a very lengthy post, but these sorts of questions and reponses come up from time to time, and I'm writing this with the hope that perhaps it will provide some guidance to others

P.P.S. Oops, I was writing this post when you posted your last note. Glad to hear that you got it working. Good Job!

Next time you might link to: How To Ask Questions The Smart Way Wink

As a supporting and moderating member of another opensource support board I can tell you that there are similiar "problems" everywhere.
