I've recently been playing around with some caching techniques to help speed up the performance of some of my custom PHP blocks (news, sports, and weather) that depend on external content feeds.

I've posted a lengthily story on my site regarding my approach and thought it be wise to make reference to it here. If you're interested, you can review my rants by clicking here.

So far, the "hack" has proven to be rock solid for my PHP blocks. I'm not sure if this approach will have wide spread use throughout Geeklog but, It couldn't hurt to try?

BTW - I've also released new versions of my PHP blocks and have also added a section on my site for versioning the code. You can get the new code here

I'd like to review your code in more detail. It may make sense to add a TTL field in the PHP block section of admin/block.php (defaulted to 0) so that people can set the expiration on a block-by-block basis. Also, in the world of caching, I have successfully tested SQL caching with some pretty dramatic results. This will be part of the new release.
The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.
