In my ongoing bad karma with commercial hosts, I have run into a Geeklog-related problem with too many queries to the mySQL database. The specific error message I get is:1226: User 'jlhughes' has exceeded the 'max_questions' resource (current value: 36000)The commercial host (Powweb) just applied this limit to mySQL and twice now when I have been accessing the site's moderation page, I've tripped this error. This disables ALL mySQL queries. The first time it happened it took 7 HOURS to get mySQL access restored.I notice that in version 1.3.5sr2 Geeklog dropped the mysql_pconnect in favor of mysql_connect.I also notice that Windows people were having trouble with mysql_pconnect.Question: Is there any other reason -- besides Windows compatibility -- for why Geeklog dropped the persistent connection to the database? And if anyone can recommend a commercial hosting service that can offer a deal comparable to Powweb's $7.77 per month for 500MB disk space and 30 GB transfer, I would like to hear about it. I'm looking for a home for a public elementary school site. This a donated site -- I don't get paid for any of my work or the cost of the site -- so I need to keep the costs down.John Hughes

RE: commercial hosting

Check out pSekHosting. I've heard good things about their services. The plan closet to the one you referred to is $6.99 with 200MB and 5GB monthly bandwidth.

Hi John, I use Powweb for 3 of my sites and I haven't seen the max yet. I did switch to psekhosting for my latest site and it has been a better fit with the charity type sites that I have been creating. I put the Canadian National Autism Foundation site there and I am quite happy.

You might check AventureHosting. It's in the UK, but nobody will know. Smile

They have two packages in your range: an $89/yr package with 1000MB of space & 15GB monthly bandwidth or a $119/yr package with 1750MB space & 35GB bandwidth.

Hope this helps...

Peace,
Rich

I'd definitely recommend psek as well. I moved there recently and love it. Quick personal support and very accomodating. Its well worth it.

Did your host recently upgrade MYSQL to version 4.02+? Someone brought up this topic before. Version 4.02 and later now have a maximum number of updates per hour limit. Perhaps if you talk to your host they'll raise the default value. If you're hitting this, I suspect many others will do the same when they upgrade their MYSQL. I think relooking into the pconnect versus connect is a good idea otherwise many will probably be in the same boat when their hosts upgrade.

Yes, Powweb moved to MySQL 4.0.11a-gamma-log and set the limit on make queries. These are the "published" limits. I believe they are actually higher: 3 Users 18,000 queries per hour per user NO limitations on updates/inserts 1,200 connections per hour Unfortunely, my low-traffic site (I was the only visitor at the time of the violation of these limits and the site had had fewer than 50 unique visitors in the last 24 hours) tripped the limit twice. Will changing to mysql_pconnect reduce the "connections" counted against the site?

I'm not a DBA, but yes I think pconnect should result in less connections since they aren't closed every time a script is exited like happens with connect. There's a limit though on the number of peristent connections a server can have at one time. As long as the request is coming from the same host, username, and password, I don't think a new connection is opened if one already exists. I've always used connect myself, but if webhosts are going to start using MySQL's new limits then IMO this is an area that needs attention. If you hit the limit on less than 50 unique visitors, then I think many more will be the same boat after they upgrade too. Luckily my host hasn't upgraded yet.
