Is this implemented or planned for new users?

I love geeklog but one feature so far I really do not like is the new user sign up form... It only ask for the user name and email address... I would like to ask for much more information than that before a user joins and though most of the information will be tied to their profile I would like to ask for information that doesn't tie to their profile too... I can create an HTML form and all but I want the new user form to be enhanced... Any ideas?

This was brought up a couple of times before, and no one responded. My guess is no one has implemented this feature. It's actually pretty trivial code to hack up a sign up page and request additional info to insert into your database. You may want to ask visitors for a ton of info while I and others are prefectly happy with the way it is right now. There are a number of software packages that enable a person to generate different forms. Evaluating them and doing a full-blown plugin to integrate into GL may require a bit of work depending on the amount of modification needed. Some of you want to collect all this additional info. My question back to you is what are you going to do with it? How are you going to analyze and manipulate it? If you all can convince me this extra data will not be collecting dust in your databases, then I may volunteer to help out here.

The new forum plugin has an extended profile. You could install that and then add those fields to the signup form.

What would I do with it? Make it publicly available (or portions of it). This way people can at least make their real names known, if not more. One site I'm working on developing would be much simplified if I could make the info of one group's members publicly available, with those members being able to modify their own information. Peace, Rich

I posted the question originally... Right on the front page of Geeklog.net is the question "is anyone using Geeklog for the enterprise?"... My question is how is it possible for most businesses to do business using an application that is strictly limited in capturing user data? Its hard to take serious foxhulk or whiskey man... I rather do business with "john serious" born 9-8-75 " hes "27" and is interested in cryptography but lives in afghanistan... (cannot export) he is old enough but one piece of vital information means no business... or vice versa... How can I do business without knowing if the user is even over age? Besides all of that what if I simply build a database of just 10,000 people... I would like to over view the collected data for reasons to help improve the business... Haven't I the right to know a little more about those using up my bandwidth and hitting my server? Geeklog is a hobby application out of the box and is a damn good one (very good) and I havent any real complaints against it... just suggestions... I think improving the ability to collect data would be a great impact on businesses using Geeklog... That is my 2 cents... Keep the change Smile

Well, I would be interested? I'm having a GL for a primary school, and new users are queed. The intention is to restrict access to students, their parents and former students. So, when somebody signs up, I would really want to know who this person really is. Storing it into the database is for me of lesser importance.

Well, we've seen at least 3 of us now who are interested in how this might be done. Anybody out there who's actually done it want to share your experience (or code) with us?

Fair enough. I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to put an effort into somethinig and people weren't going to use the data once collected. Right now, I'm hacking up the database.php file to give those who can't execute the mysqldump utility an alternative backup routine to use inside their GL. It basically gives people the same export functionality as is in phpmyadmin plus if they want they can break their database into multiple files of a desired size or by table. After I get done and through debugging this thing, I'll take on the forms generator next. That area has a lot of products so it will take some time to look at them unless I find a good one early.

Has the "profile form generator" project been shelved? I'm interested in replacing my phpWebSite installation (v. 7.2) at www.boatclub.org with Geeklog and would love to see some method for an Admin to add/modify fields in the User Profiles form without touching code. Most of the fields I need are simply extra demographics - not necessary to integrate with other Geeklog functionality.
