Found The Broken Theme Bug!

After many times of hitting the bug I found how to get the bug over and over again.... Heres the bug.. Sometimes you will sit and hit refresh on Geeklog and Pictures are missing.. Ive seen this lots of times on all geeklog sites. Heres how to get it to happen go to a site and let it sit there for 2-3 mins(but do 3 mins) and dont do anything on the site (like a normal user would do if there reading something long) Then hit the refresh button and wahla theres a missing picture on the theme (usually the blocks have a missing picture)... To see it the easiest go to www.codersresource.com and try it there on the default menu or try it on any geeklog site (but its easier to find at mine because no overlappin pictures). Im using Internet explorer latest version. This does this on multiple machines too.

When I first hit your site, the top left graphic on each block didn't display. Everything else looked fine. Then, I waited several minutes like you said and did a refresh. All the graphics displayed fine even the previous missing piece. I did this a few times and couldn't recreate the first time I hit your site. Must be hitting some flaw in IE.

I tried this with four different browsers on my Mac, and there were no missing images. I waited longer than three minutes before doing the refresh in all cases. Have you done this test with other browsers at Geeklog sites, or at non-Geeklog sites with IE?---Kevin

Here are a few things you can try:

-- If it's not related to having changed any options or installing ad blocking programs (which can also block some graphics and animations) then you may need to repair your browser. The last few versions of Internet Explorer have a repair feature. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, highlight Microsoft Internet Explorer in the list of programs, click Add/Remove, a box will come up that gives you various options, select Repair. This will repair damaged files and return IE to it's default settings.

-- Something else that might help out is to delete your internet cache. More specifically, click on the tools menu, go down to Internet Options, then click on Delete files. IE may have problems displaying some images when it has alot of pages stored, and is sometimes not able to automatically delete the old stuff to make room for the new.

-- If those two don't work, then see if you fit into previously reported display problems. Here are some that may fit. You can also do a search. If none of these fit either, then I recommend you submit a report to microsoft and see what they think the problem is causing it.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307239
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316545

for older IE browsers:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;176945

I'm sure it is very frustraiting for you, but it's frustrating for us also who can't reproduce this. BTW, nice flash graphic on your site.

Sometimes the missing graphics are being caused by extremely long file names for the theme images. I've had this problem with default XSilver (as far as I know), where the bottom corners of blocks and stories keep turning up missing. Checked the images on my installs, and sure enough, some of them were missing the extension .gif or had a partial like .g or .gi.

I fixed this in my newest theme, XNature, which incidentially is available for download here and on Squatty's.

You all can check it out at EoE.

Well this is sorta interesting... I have a older laptop that has internet explorer 6 but no updates after that (no service pack 1 etc).. It works perfect with it and I never loose any images.. But I have 2 computers a home that have the same display images problem. So its gotta be prob service pack 1..

Very interesting. I don't run service pack 1 either and have no problems seeing the display. Perhaps that's it! hopefully. hehehe

Solution fixed! I was right its a SP1+ Iexplorer 6 issue... To disable a thing called image resize. To disable the image resize feature of Internet Explorer, please perform the following steps: 1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options... 2. In the Advanced tab, uncheck the Enable Automatic Image Resizing item, and click OK. -------------------------------------------------------- "A Large Sack of Flour Makes A Big Biscut"

I.E. sucks! The theme I'm currently working on is using PNGs and will be valid XHTML 4.01, I have to include this dirty little javascript so IE will be able to handle transparent PNGs. I would suggest using Mozilla/Phoenix or Opera if you use Windows.---Matty
